I know there are lots of scams on Craiglist. I am currently selling a camera and got the following message:

Thanks for getting back to me.. Am buying the (Panasonic Camera) for my son as a birthday gift, He’s in Africa on a construction contract, am unhealthy to pick it up so i will be paying you through PayPal. Please send me a PayPal invoice or your PayPal identification email for payment. I will provide you my sons shipping information for shipment as soon as the payment is sent. I will be paying you the sum of ($1,100 USD) to cover the cost and shipping to Africa, Shipping will be through USPS Registered or Priority mail. Thanks for your help.

Does this sound legit? I think if I am payed via Paypal I should be fine right? Any experiences of anyone getting hosed like this?

Thanks!

Something doesn't seem right. Although I don't see obvious risk with the statement...it seems like there's another shoe that has yet to drop.

I wouldn't send out of the U.S. or Canada myself....

Yeah I got a sort of sick feeling in my stomach when I read it. Think I may wait an hour or two and tell him someone paid cash.

It looks like a Canned Scam response to me....

Sounds like it's probably a stolen paypal account. I only ship to verified paypal addresses when I accept paypal payments. You might get your payment without trouble now, but paypal could take the money back or close your account later when the rightful owner files a complaint.

I think that's the most plausible explanation. They seem to be hoping for a quick turnaround and have you ship before the shoe drops with PayPal.

I am selling something on Craiglist as well and received a similar email. I emailed them back telling them we'll use paypal and if he paid using an e-check I would not ship anything until the funds were secured on my end. Never heard from them again.

Run away - cash only, face to face only. Craigslist is a snakepit.
Lots of good peeps out there too. Communications should give you a pretty good idea. I have never had any problems with any of my Craigslist transactions.

Thanks guys. I;'m gonna tell this person to pound sand.
This is a pretty common scam. If you hang around, they will send you all kinds of faked emails about shipping instructions and fund transfers. You could get real close. :assassin:

I find if they are not ready to at least deal with you on the phone it is usually a scam + too sick to do anything and son in africa like was already said run dont walk

I totally agree it is a scam. I think some do it for fun just to screw with someone. I have been trying to sell two Harleys on CL for six months now. I cannot tell you how many scammers have replied. The dead giveaway is their odd english phrasing. You can tell when it isnt someones native language. I think a lot of these scams are coming out of Eastern Europe. What they hope to gain I cannot fathom. Maybe out of 10000 they get one sucker?? Good luck with your sale. I have had a lot of luck with CL. There are a lot of decent people out there if you can weed out the ass hats.

Make the deal. After the money is transferred, contact paypal to verify the account is not hacked. Transfer the money out of paypal. Ship the item. ;)

Absolutely agree - bought both my bikes, sold my bike and two cars. Its about communication and local transactions - as soon as you hear "for my son stationed in Nigeria", you should worry... or if they offer you MORE than you are asking.
