Lessee, we have a couple of fresh deer strikes and a three separate near misses yesterday. Today, while Strommin' the back roads of Santa Babs, I had multiple close encounters all within a 150 mile loop of home, in this order:

  • Cat being chased by a
  • Dog
  • Deer
  • A rafter of big fookin' wild turkeys
  • Squirrel (splat)
  • Turkey buzzard
  • Gophersnake
  • Deer
  • Ground Squirrel (splat #2)
  • Coyote
  • Neighborhood bratty, punk-***, skateboardin', freak Goth kid
Except for the first two and last one, I can't remember ever seeing this much fauna on the roadways. The rafter of gobblers was the nearest miss, the others were close, but easily avoided. The two squirrels had no chance, but it was their call. I tried really hard for Goth-boy, but he was just too quick for me on his skateboard. All of this was just the live ones... the plethora of carcases littering the roads lately is truly astounding. The above mentioned buzzard was dining on a fresh possum kill, as example.
Now I know that winter is coming and we have been in a drought effectively forcing these critters into populated places, but this is getting crazy! I think I'm going to stick to the main roadways until spring.

Beware the Jihad-crazed jaywalking/flying/slithering critters!

TWN, I agree. Our local has never been worse. Just tonight my dog went full speed down the hill, chasing something.. when I looked up, it was full sized mountain lion. Very glad Harley is old and fat and he gave up the chase.. the critters are simply everywhere right now. And at 8k a whack, it's just not worth it.

Of course, I'm riding tommorrow - 229, 58, 41 - I never said I was, uh, bright.

True, odot, but those skinny *******s are always amped up on the energy drink du jour, meth or both. Makes 'em hard to bag. ;)

Ouch! I'm going try to stick to my bad habit of hitting large trees, that only cost me $4k.

We have lots of blacktails around here, seeing one munched on the side of the road is too common. I think when fall happens many animals change their habits and show up crossing roads more.

The last time I was on Tepusquet Rd., I came around a bend and found a raffle of turkeys:

Resolved: The official group name for turkeys on the FJR Forum is hereby: rafter.

(My source lists both raffle and rafter as group names for turkey. I just picked the wrong one.)

Same deal here in the east. No food in the mountains due to a late spring freeze and drought. Critters congregated along roads twice daily, and the forest rat rut is just weeks away when it is all day anytime. Set yer sail w/ caution.

I think rafter sounds better. I'm glad we settled on that. A raffle of turkeys sounds too much like a contest at the county fair.

It's been raining about once a week up here for three weeks. Looks like we might get a wet winter.

Turkey Buzzards...YIKES!! Keep your distance!!

I came across one dining on road pizza ala groundhog one very hot August afternoon. When he saw me coming, he tried to take off with the carcass but only got ten feet off the ground before he dropped the bloody stinking mess and showered me with maggots. :bad: :bad: :bad:

So where does a raffle/ rafter of turkeys stand in relationship to a flock? Would there be more in a flock, or less?
