Doggy bored Dad. Take him for a run in the woods off leash every day. Either he will get over his boredom or he will run off never to be seen again. What ya got to lose!?

Or you could just teach him to ride and then he would have to take better care of the bike.

I have a solution for you. Go brew some beer.

Yeah, that's right. Homebrew.

I was cooking up a batch of home brew a couple of years ago, back when we still had 2 rescued greyhounds. After the boil when I was cleaning up, I dumped all the spent hop leaves into a small wastebasket I had down in the basement brewery. Well, it seems that those wort sweetened hops were just too much of a potential treat for our big lunkhead grey, TW's DD Dancer (we called him "Danny"). He just had to chow down on some of them tasty hops for the little bit of sweet liquid wort that remained. It sure wasn't for the hops themselves, as you'd already know if you ever stuck some hops in your mouth. But actually, if you know Greyhounds, you wouldn't be all that surprised. When they come off the track they will eat just about anything (including their own, ahem... waste)!!

A couple of hours later and Ole' Danny was panting like he had just finished his last race at the Belmont track. We had to take him to the Vet and have his stomach pumped and some charcoal granules fed into him to decontaminate the poor ole' boy. If he wasn't such a sweet dog (maybe like yours as an example?) one could just let him expire due to high fever from the hops' toxicity.

Oh, by the way, I named that particular batch "Danny's Lip Smackin Porter". It was down-right gooood! ;)

Talcum and a tube of grease? I think that falls under the better you than me category.

If you really need to keep the dog then it's actually time to teach him to stay away from the bike. There are several types of training collars on the market that will reinforce his need to stay the F away from the bike, (Dogtra) is one brand. A definate and sensible plan is also required to implement the "keep away from this item program". I'm a dog person and desperately miss my English bull terrier (Rumor) that we lost to cancer many years ago,......... You really gotta

know bullies, their a freaking riot. My dear wife Now has a yorkshire terrier AKA (SHITRAT),....There would be a tear in my eye for a couple of minutes if it passed on. And if you decide to go the training collar route i expect you to wear it and give the dear wife the controller so you understand the effect.

good luck

-Don

Dayum...that sucks...animals are basically a pain in the *** sometimes. Most often not, but yep...boredom will make dogs chew anything they find. Get her out and let 'er run!

I'll start a new thread to ask for Monkey butt powder donations for 'ya.

C'mon Fencer, dogs will be dogs.

Besides you know the old saying.....Eat my sh$t once shame on you, eat my sh$t twice shame on me!

You just got to learn to get inside their head and out think'em. :derisive:

Ya know, if you'd keep the damn dog outta the living room he wouldn't be able to get up on to the Feejer. Oh wait, this is the FJRFORUM not the H-D forum. My bad.

What your really need to do is train the damn dog. It's not a person, it's a dog. If the dog is eating stuff out of your tank bag it is probably eating stuff off the kitchen table too, right? Is this acceptable behavior? The kids will enjoy the dog a lot more if you train it properly too.

The first thing you need to do is commit to about 2 hours a day to training. If you can't do that, then you really shouldn't have a dog in the first place. Then call some local breeders and get the names of some recommended professional dog trainers. Have the trainer work with you, your wife and your kids so they all know how to control the dog.

It may cost you a few hundred dollars, but that is probably not much more than the value of the stuff the dog has destroyed so far.

I went through this with a Rottweiler a few years ago. It tried to eat every other dog that came within 20 yards of it. After we got done with the training, it never even looked at another dog. It also never jumped on anyone or any thing, never barked at anyone and would never leave the yard if we didn't put a leash on him.

There are some people on this Forum that would never have a chance at dog training if this is a requirement ;)

It's sort of like the guy with the $40k bass boat, $40k truck to tow it and $10k worth of fishing gear that comes home empty handed after a battle of wits with a fish

Well, it sounds to me like you need a shorter dog.....perhaps you should feed him every now and then???

Sorry to hear of your problem...but remember that the gear can be replaced....the pup can't.
