Damn my 06 got damaged.

Well coming back from a local ride with a bunch of friends, my 06's lower left fairing got damaged while avoiding several fist size rocks in the road way. I was able to avoid most of the rocks, but I hit the very last rock. I didn't lose control. I checked the bike and found 2 seperate scratches (1 1/2 inches) and 2 gouges (1/2 inch) on left lower fairing. I am debating whether to fix at local body shop or leave it along way it is right now. This sucks. At least I didn't go down. (MSF and motor school practice training paid off) What do you think, should I fix or not? It is kind hard to see the damages from distance. My damn digital camera is the broke and can't post pictures right now.

Both fairing lowers, the stator cover, oil filter, glove box lid, left side switch assembly, and the left grip all took hits. I took delivery of it any way, and immediately took it to a three day ride in the Texas Hill Country.

Bike was evidently damaged by Yamaha staff when the bike was crated, and so Yamaha is picking up the tab, though, so I am luckier there than you.

Parts all just got here this past Friday (two days ago), and are sitting in my garage waiting for me to install 'em all.

What would I do if I were in your shoes?

Go to Color Rite and give them a call to get some touch up paint. Do the best garage touch-up you can and then either start saving for a new panel, or start watching e-Bay for one.

Sorry your bike took a hit.

Only because I want to...

My dealer would be happy to put on the new pieces, and Yamaha would certainly prefer he do so. However, I have known my dealer since before he was a dealer, and we are good friends. He knows I prefer to work on my own stuff, and that I was a motorcycle mechanic for a long, long time... along with other things relating to motorsports mechanicals.

Literally the only thing I let a dealer do on my bikes these days is change tires (I hate that chore) or plug in a piece of diagnostic equipment I don't have. I like working on my own stuff, and have a ball learning new bikes along the way. Hell, I would have bought it in the crate and assembled myself if I could have, but for liability reasons these days the dealers can't let ya' do that... I was standing right there while they assembled mine, though! :detective2:

Doesn't sound too bad - you didn't go down, and you weren't injured - and that's what's important!!

Seems you took the MSF class for a reason, eh? It could have been worse.

IMHO, just leave the scratches - it shows that you ride !!

Leave the battle scars, it may give you an excuse to do a whole new paint scheme.

Yamaha doesn't have the 06 paint code yet...they THINK they do, but it's for another year or model.

Color-Rite should have a code sometime in the next week.

Here an idea but a temporary fix. I would paint a bandaide over the scratches with a big ouch written accross it just as a reminder. Than follow ZZK's idea a new paint job completely

What evasive aaction did you take to save yourself ? just curios

I went to school at Texas A&M, and helped put myself through college there by working as a mechanic at University Cycles Yamaha back when it was over at Northgate next to the theater! Was owned by Joe Fisher then, and though Joe was... shall we say... *different*, he really was a great guy and it was a fun place to work. I don't know whatever happened to Joe...

Did a ton of road racing in those days, too, out at Texas World Speedway, at Aqua Fest in Austin each year, and up at Henderson and Hallett. Even my stepson went to Aggieland and got his degree there!

Wish I had known you were up there a few weeks ago. We had a big ride over in the Hill Country. Based out of Kerrville and had about 25 riders for three days. One all the way from Los Angeles, another from Show Low, Arizona, and the rest from all over Texas. Was a hoot. Drop me a PM and I'll put you on our ride e-mail list for future ones. Will have some other smaller ones the next few months, but the next big one is gonna' be in Big Bend in October. We did one out there last fall and it was fantastic.

What class are you? Sandi & I are class of 85 and Sandi is getting her Masters now at A&M!

Sandi & I too worked 40 hours a week while we were going to school - in fact, the original PC-Sweep for DOS was written in 1982 while we were freshmen and it helped start us in the software business (and have never looked back)!

I bought my FJR1300AE from University Cycles Yamaha (suppose to be here any day)!

KD, you are right. At least I didn't go down. Years of practice paid off. Anyway, I was thinking about transforming my 06 to police bike for pssible off duty job. I better start to save money for new police scheme paint job, lights, siren and crash bars.

Until then I will ride it like I own it.

Go to the colorrite site and look for their tips section. It says for the correct match you need the base and color, if I'm not mistaken from when I looked last week. No scratches for my bike.....yet

Smile, tell the ladies that the battle scar is from you trying to miss a child who ran out into the street after his tiny puppy. Add to it by saying that you stopped, scooped up the puppy, and safely returned the puppy and child to their mother. While off the bike, a large semi flew past and the wind blew your bike against the curb causing the fairing scratch.
