I dont' know about the traffic and perception of a crowd at Indy this year but it certainly looked like a lot of empty seats on the TV coverage....which cleverly cut away everytime to keep the view of empty seats out of the picture as much as possible. Maybe the crowd and traffic SEEMS big because the support structure for the race has been scaled way back, too.
Well, I finally got time to watch the taped replay of the TV coverage so I could see the empty seats you spoke of. So why were the seats empty? Heat! It was hotter than hell at Indy this year. I was one of the poor *******s sitting in the sun and I sweated it out at the cost of drinking about 3 gallons of liquid during a 3 1/2 hour race - and only one trip to the john. Lots of the people who sat near me were frequently ducking into the concession area for more liquids (waiting in long lines to pay $5 for a cup of lemonade!) and a dose of shade. And the folks in the Tower Terrace, if they were smart, went behind the Pagoda to watch on the big TV screen in the shade back there. They were directly in the sun and there was almost no breeze at all. It was about 96 degrees and very humid. TV said 3rd hottest Indy ever, and it sure felt like it.

Scaled back race structure? I wasn't sure what you were saying there.
