A 21-year-old man survived an accident Saturday morning that catapulted him from his motorcycle and landed him on the right shoulder of State Road 836, the Dolphin Expressway, police said.
''It was really lucky for him that he was wearing his helmet,'' said Lt. Donna Ganz of the Florida Highway Patrol. ``I don't think he would be alive.''
The man, whose name has not been released by police, was ejected from the motorcycle and landed on the right shoulder of the highway, Ganz said.
The man suffered broken bones, bruises and scrapes, and was listed in stable condition at the Jackson Memorial Hospital's Ryder Trauma Center, authorities said.
Witnesses told police he was traveling westbound at more than 100 mph on his red and gray Kawasaki when he tried to switch lanes and hit the front wheel of a dump truck and then bounced against another vehicle. That's when he flew off the motorcycle.
The man was charged with improper passing on a motorcycle between two vehicles. Ganz said the man had a suspended license and no motorcycle endorsement.
The accident left the road covered with debris, including fragments of the truck tire and motorcycle gas tank.
