Hello guys,

I know this is totally unrelated to the thread. I went for a short ride today and I absolutely love this bike. It doesn't handle like a sport touring at all. It feels more like a sport bike. The FJR hides its heavy weight exceptionally well. I'm just extra careful at slow speeds since it feels top heavy with a full tank of gas. This feel is probably related to my lack of experience with big bikes. What I love the most is the way it handles the turns, plus the ABS braking. It really expires a great deal of confidence. I'm just really satisfied with my FJR.

Best regards.

Wow, if you're utilizing the ABS feature of your FJR in short, normal, daily riding -- you're really riding that thing...!

Hello,

My 08 FJR1300AE neutral dash green light comes on at any gear over 1500RPM. While in neutral at standing still, the light works properly. First gear and up, comes on intermittently after around 1500RPM.

Any advise is appreciated,

Thanks in advance,

Best regards.
Your bike and mine have to get together and come up with some sort of compromise. My neutral light only sometimes works at all. I did a little playing with it and I think the issue is with the neutral switch assembly. Took the switch out and as far as I can tell its not making appropriate contact. The other gear indicators work correctly so, in my case, I think a wire or a connection is broken. The contact pad is clean and not particularly worn. I'll trace the wire back and see if it can be fixed before I replace the switch.

Hello Ross,

Thanks for the feedback.

I will definitely check that.

Hello charismaticmegafauna,

Sorry If I didn't explain myself correctly. I'm not using the ABS on a regular basis, however I did have a situation on the freeway like a year ago where the ABS saved my life. What I was trying to say is that having the ABS safety net gives me a great deal of confidence on such a big bike.

I just think ABS is a great thing for a guy like me that is not use to big bikes "Confidence wise". I never cared about ABS on sport bikes; nevertheless I can now appreciate the reason why the FJR’s come with it.

Best regards.

Remember the AE and the Gen-II A have different neutral switches. In the Gen-II A it's part of the gear indicator switch, in the AE it's a separate neutral switch like GenI bikes. Don't tear into the wrong part looking for something.

In either case the wire you're looking for from the neutral switch is sky blue in color. It runs from the switch to the starter cutoff relay (which I think is still under the seat on Gen-II bikes) and to the ECU. From the starter cutoff relay it's a sky-blue/white wire to the dash panel. The sky blue (no white stripe) wire from the dash panel is the 12-volt side of the light, don't worry about that one.

You actually have a smallish chance of a safety issue, because if the ECU sees the ground on that wire (which it will if the light is on) then lowering the sidestand will not shut the bike off. (It should keep it from starting, but it won't shut it off.

It's entirely possible the problem is not the wire, but the starter cutoff relay.

I missed the fact that we were talking about an AE. Yes, the neutral is different and separate from the gear indicator, unlike the "regular" Gen II. In my case, it is looking like the switch is bad - symptoms are very intermittant function of the neutral light - almost never works now. Can't see how a funky switch would simply short out above a specific RPM unless there is some strange vibration harmonic going on.

Nope, behind the front fairing.

General view of fairingless front . . . . . Centre shows "Relay Unit"

Picture taken from my (unfortunate) Fairing Removal How-To. Not saying you need to remove the fairing to get to it, off hand I don't know.

Ross,

When the light isn't working can you still start the bike without pulling in the clutch? If the switch is actually bad, I'd expect it not to start except with the clutch in.

When the light does not come on, the bike can only be started in neutral with the sidestand up and the clutch pulled. The interlock "thinks" it is in gear. If the clutch is released after starting, it continues to operate but quits when the sidestand is lowered. When I first got the bike, the neutral light worked about 70% of the time; now hardly ever. I opened the connector and everything seems good there. I removed the switch and the contact pads look good. I'm guessing a broken wire.

Thanks. Never had a chance to dissect a Gen-II, and nobody will bring one by for me to play with.

Love to come by, but the route's a bit tricky.

N dash light stoped lighting up while on gears on it's own. I guess Yamaha created a self repair system on the FJR's :yahoo: .
