hi all.

i have done a search (using datel+install+06) and got only results for gen 1 bikes.

i would like info on where people are mounting the meter on 06 bikes ?

pics would be great.

someone mush have some ideas / already installed one ?

i want to install it this weekend. i dont think there's enough room behind the

battery, like where most people put them on the gen 1 bikes.

please help.

Jason,

I've only seen one 06 with a Datel installed - it's Tom Melchild's. I saw it once, at WFO6 last July. He had installed the Datel in either the left or right panel (a or d) I think it was panel d, by the battery. There is enough room there, if you get it just right.

I've seached all of my pics from that event, but can't find one of Tom's cockpit. I'll keep looking.

In the mean time, it needs to be visible from the riders seat - but keep in mind it is bright at night. It would fit in the left panel - lots of room there. You could even install it in the cowling, next to the left panel, between the accessory box and the tank. Just a thought.

On my 07'A it's going on the left side on the small panel where the AE has it's heated grips controller. I also put a relay and fuse block for the accessories that I am adding just back from the glove box and will power the voltmeter, grips, seat, and zumo.

The other reason for putting it in that small panel is if I want to relocate it for some other stategic advantage, replacing the panel shouldn't be too expensive.

thanks.

ill further investigate installing it near the battery.

as i have the AE, i cant use the heated grip controller mount (for obvious reasons)

what ever the final mounting position, it will be powered via an ignition switched relay.

and im going to try to put it on a position that wont be a PIA for night riding....

thanks again.

nice install.

but as stated above, i have the AE, so i cant use this location.

will try something on the other side this weekend.

im still at a loss to find somewhere neat to install the meter.

im almost at the point of installing it in a box, and screwing it to the panel that covers the battery.

ugly i know but can't see an alternative apart from cuting a hole in the fairing right outside the battery.

here is where im talking about. really dont want to cut into this part, as cost is a factor if i screw up,

or need to replace the panel for any reason.

X marks the spot. its about the only place i can think of right now.

i dont want to do that. will spend some more tine head scratching this weekend.

That's almost exactly where mine is mounted on my 05. Easy enough to see, but helmet blocks the view when I'm looking up so I don't have that red glow at night in my perif vision. Nice!

Any problem sticking it in my tankbag where I can see it through the window? I've got the tankbag plugged into a Powerlet outlet hardwired to battery (not switched). Would there be any voltage drop that would be significant?

I'm not the expert here and in fact I have mine wired thru my BlueSea in the back. I generally read 14.2v on start-up and that runs down to 14.1 once the bike settles down so I don't think I'm missing much if any accuracy.

If your plug runs right to the battery I would posit that no, you won't see any "significant" voltage drop. As discussed on another thread, you might want to disconnect the Datel when you park the bike. Won't drain the battery quickly, but will represent a steady draw. I think 41 days was the "days to dead battery" calculation (that is if you park the bike w/o running it for that long).
