Dealership says no to "unwind throttle spring"

I have done this mod on my Gen1. It helps greatly. The spring tension is so bad this really helps that and my throttle lock. I think I unwound two full revolutions, no ill effect. I have heard of no one having any issues doing this. Remember you have a push-pull throttle, should be no issues for emergencies.

Mamma-Yamaha will say that not using their oil, or modifying your exhaust is a liabilty etc. Farkling is also a huge liabilty adding power outlets, etc. All very bad.

Take it all with a grain of salt.

I did mine shortly after reading about it on this forum. It was stupid easy. After I lubed the cable, cleaned and lubed the throttle assembly for peace of mind I just took a small flatblade screwdriver and sorta 'flicked' the spring tang. It happened so fast I wasn't sure if it actually unwound or not. It was pretty evident after a few twists of the throttle and a ride around the block. pretty noticable difference. my Father has an 04 and when we traded bikes on a long ride he made me unwind his at a rest stop. lol

I pretty much consider this a 'must-do' for the FJR.

Edit: Just pay attention when you do it and you'll be golden. Vegas odds that your local Stealership wrench monkeys wont even know.

For Pete's sake, what do you think a dealer is going to say about anything that would remotely saddle them with any kind of potential liability issue arising from the non-sanctioned things we do to these bikes? Do and quit talking about it or just forget it.

I see that your bike is an '05. Are you the original owner? If not, are you sure the previous owner didn't already unwind the spring once?
Regardless if it's been done or not, bang'n says the throttle is too stiff. As long as there is still enough spring to return the throttle it shouldn't matter if the spring was released one or two turns.

It isn't totally risk free, a few have had the spring fail to catch and it completely unwound; a real PITA to fix.

There were a number of Gen I unspringers, but it became real popular with the later Gen IIs.

We assume that the throttle tube & the throttle cables move freely; the throttle pulley isn't binding and they all are properly maintenanced (lubed).
Come on, there are four return springs on that damn thing. We can't do without a couple of turns? I just held my throttle bodies in my hands for the first time and I really considered just taking off one of the outer springs entirely. I didn't, 'cause I thought I was having an original thought and my original thinking often leads to headaches, but I'm really surprised to hear that a turn or two makes a big difference. Has anyone tried taking one whole spring off?? :yahoo:

Did throttle return spring mod today, easy as pie. Just like ya'll stated and big difference. First time in working on this bike, no biggy. Thanks for your pearls of wisdom and inspiring motivation. Really made a BIG difference.

Actually, we are unwinding the "main" throttle return spring. When I did mine, it was relaxed after 2 turns. Because of the design and releasing the return spring only the butterfly (Throttle body) springs are shutting them.. As with others, it made a huge difference to me. Of course, I have really old and abused wrists from too many years helping my dad roof houses and then as a dry wall taper/finisher.

I don't know that anyone has tried removing one of each pair of butterfly springs. Maybe you could be the first and report back.

For those of us who use throttle locks, it would make them easier to set and hold.

He was eliminated from competition when is johnson fell out of his smock during filming and smacked Rachel Ray in the tonsils.

He's now back to tending bar in a Cambodian Whorehouse and Pickle Restaurant.
