Construction of Vehicle Identification Number for 2006 FJR1300. For example, let's use JYARP15E*6A000001 which would be the first U.S. 49-state bike to roll off the production line:
First 3 digits: Make and Type of Vehicle JYA = YAMAHA Motorcycle (Manufactured in Japan)
Next 5: Vehicle description code RP15E
Next 1: Check Digit * (This code is used to detect errors in the V.I.N. and consists of a single-digit number (0-9) or a letter "X". It has no direct bearing upon the description code or sequential production number.
Next 1: Model Year 6 = 2006
Next 1: Plant representation A
Final 6: Sequential Production Number 000001
I have no idea why Yamaha uses "RP15E" for the FJR's Vehicle Description Code ... Honda uses "SC570" for its new CBR1000RR so go figure. Please note that Cal. models may have a letter other than "E" at the end of their five-digit Vehicle Description Code (Honda uses the numbers "0" and "1" to differentiate between 49-state and Cal. models). For actual V.I.N.'s the random Check Digit would replace the asterisk between the "E" and "6". On my FJR its check digit is "9". I don't know what "A" means in Plant representation, but Honda uses an "M" which indicates the Hamamatsu Factory in Japan where its sportbikes are made. The first "0" in the six-digit Sequential Production probably has something to do with manufacturer location. For Honda's 1000RR, the first number in its S.P.N. is "2".
P.S. - Out of curiosity, I called American Honda back in '93 when I had a CBR900RR to try to find out what its V.I.N. meant. So, that was my introduction to the topic. It was helpful to cross reference and compare Honda & Yamaha V.I.N.'s while attempting to do this. Anyway, I've been lurking on the forum since I decided to get an '06 FJR; I placed my order on Dec. 1 and took delivery two weeks ago. I've gleaned a lot of valuable info here and hope you find this post informative.
