About a year ago one of America's finest Motorcycle Safety Advocate, and a friend to anyone who rides lost his own life when a dear ran out in front of him. He went from place to place and all over the country on his bike to promote motorcycle safety and awareness. I am sorry I can't remember this man's name, but the only thing that comes to mind is, if a deer can run out in front of him with all of his knowledge and ability to quickly react to just about any situation, there is nothing any of us can do ..... if it can happen to him, it can happen to the rest of us. Because of this I try not to ride after the sun goes down, I know I miss some of the best time there is to ride, but I also miss the deer I know are around here waiting to run out in front of me at any time.

To some extent we are all being 'held hostage' by these forest rats and other critters. As well as paying higher insurance premiums (Ins. Cos. love the business) and having to live with the after effects of busted bones, etc; we all, sooner or later, adjust our lives to only using part of the time allowed us for riding -- the rest belongs to the critters. I say terminate all of 'em; who needs them? Take back the environment (it's been said that there are more deer in the U.S., now, than when the Pilgrims landed). .... And, don't get me started on those who feed critters in their yards!

I think that I may hole a record in deer kill----14----hits-----16-------Chuck
Ya got me beat, I'm up to 6 hits in cars. But I got 2 deer at once. Got car slowed down enuf (5-10 mph) so they didn't do damage at first , after the initial hit, the buck did a mule kick in left side fender,, F'd it up real good (fender).

Even if you believe the whistles do work, how do you maintain them ?

How often do you have to remove bugs and other road debris from them ?

They are claimed to be "ultrasonic". Do you test'em once in a while with an occiliscope ?

I hit a deer about 7 years ago on a snowmobile in Northern Wisconsin. I was very lucky to survive and hitting another deer on the FJR is one of my greatest fears while riding.

If statistics showed that deer whistles prevent accidents I would surely have some installed already.

A few years back 1994, I was going north on Hwy 3 in Northern California. On a long downhill (north side of Scott Mountain), around a relatively fast 180 degree turn, here comes two fawns (with spots) running up the road toward me about 100 yards ahead. I was on my 89 Hurricane thankfully, the brakes are tremendous for that era of bike. I was using 100% braking power on the front wheel. I slowed from about 80 down to 20-25 by the time the deer were about 50 feet from me when they split and each went in separate directions.

Earlier the same day on the same road by Trinity Lake, I had about 40 pound black bear cub cross the road on the dead run about 50 feet in front of me. Man can those little suckers run. Just glad I didn't see mama bear right behind it.

In 1995 on the same corner as the deer I came around the same corner about the same speed to see about 200 head of cattle being driven up the road to open country. No lead rider and no warning they were driving them up the road. I stopped shut off the bike and waited. You can imagine all the cowsh*t and pi$$ all over the road for the next three miles where they drove them on the road.

And yes fresh cowsh*t is slippery(er?) than antifreeze/oil/diesel on the road.

thankfully, I have not taken one out...knock on wood. I agree, everyone should be able to shoot 10 a year. Besides, venison jerky is really good. :)

I use the deer whistles too. They also work on raccoons, opossums, ground hogs and other critters. Saved my butt more than once, and all for only $9.95. But wait, if you call within the next 5 minutes you get not one but two deer whistles!

Change the hunting laws, kill them all!

Paying attention while riding is no doubt a good idea but isn't worth a hill of beans when it comes to deer.

I have a couple close calls every year and its pure luck (or answered prayers) that I haven't hit one yet.

They leap out behind a tree, bush etc and in my case are usually across the street before I can react.

I even see them during daylight hours on the side of the road.

I'm pretty sure I won't let a car nail me and also pretty sure if/when I wreck again (haven't in over 20 yrs) that it will be a freakin' deer!

About the Hornet..."This sonic wave has proven its ability to alert deer and most other animals to approaching vehicles with sufficient warning..." It doesn't repel deer. It alerts them. To your approach. There just seems something wrong with that.

I read an aritcle about a guy who gets gov't contracts to take out feral pigs. We need a guy to take out deer. Any hunters want to start their own business? Then you can say "Killing is my business, and business is good." Ba-dum-dum-pshh
