Bike riding at night used to be a favorite of mine, but deer have changed all that, since they tend to move more frequently around dusk. That being said, my last two close calls with deer were 8am to 9am. Bottom line, they tend to be least active during daytime hours and most active at dusk and daybreak.

The old adage here in Pennsylvania is that when you see one deer crossing the road, there are usually more coming behind it. They sell plastic sonic deer whistles to mount on a vehicle but I'm not sure they are proven. Some people say if a group of deer are 'frozen' in the road to flash headlights high-low to break their stare -- YEAH, if you have time! Deer are also 'the enemy' here when it comes to growing a home landscape or vegetable garden -- deer coexist in suburbia with the homeowners. The paragraph below is from a spring newsletter I just mailed to my landscaping clients.

"State Farm Insurance reports that Pennsylvania deer collisions accounted for 18,000 out of 179,000 claims received nationwide for the 12-month period ended June 30, 2005. Michigan ranked second in vehicle-deer collisions with 14,541. Third was Illinois, followed by Ohio, Georgia, Minnesota, Virginia, Indiana, Texas and Wisconsin, in that order."
