This is the front page of the Gwinnett County GA paper. The area is not that large, just Gwinnett county. It represents deer strikes in 2004 (mostly cars I guess). This is in metro Atlanta, scary to think of all the deer further out where I live/ride/work. All the red dots indicate a strike.

After living in Gwinnett County the past 12 years, I can believe it. I hit one myself just last week in the truck (luckily mininal damage to both the truck and the deer) and had one hit me (tried to jump over my truck but clipped the front quarter panel between the wheel and the door)about 3 years ago in almost the same spot.

I know, I live just north of you in Barrow county (soon to move to the mtns though) and used to ride to Blairsville 90 miles north everyday and while riding up 985 only 10 miles I would see anywhere from 1-3 fresh deer kills/wk depending on what season it was. I used to see fresh kills, not more than an hour or two and though "could of have been me hitting that" (on my then ZRX). I've said it before and will say it again that if anything gets me out there I think it will likely be a deer, tooo many of them and toooo dumb and unpredictable. If I ever quit riding street and go strickly off road it will be becuase of deer. Don't think it only happens dusk-dawn either though it is more likely and wayyy more dangerous to ride then, I know of riders hitting them in the middle of the day (damn I hate that!!!!).

Be safe, stay alert,

When are people going to start understanding that deer are nothing but hoofed rats. If people had rats running all over the roads and their back yards they certainly wouldn't object to exterminating them. We have destroyed all the deer's natural preditors, and now they are over populated to the point of starvation. We should put a 20 bounty on them and kill as many of the forest rats as we can.

I couldn't agree more. Get rid of any and all restrictions and KILL THEM ALL. Too bad all the cages and general population don't sympathize with our plight and for some, unfortunate end. Most people think they are pretty and are not concerned with the life ending threat that we worry about.

You dont really think that Federal Wildlife Marshal Willenholly is gonna exterminate deer just so you feel safer on your bike do ya?

I live in Wyoming and expect the deer. Its the out of state tourists you really gotta watch for.

Alright ya'll need to get over to Baton Rouge immediately! Find the Guns, Beer and Ammo store, get loaded up, and fix this :D

I live in Colorado and I thought CO had a deer infestation :worriedsmiley: until I worked in West Virgina for two years [daily one way trip was appox 50 miles on state roads in all seasons]. A typical day was 2 or 3 fresh deer kills and a typical week was included someone on the construction site [approx 200 vehicles] getting a fresh vehicle due deer strikes. :eek:mg2: Most of my daily trip was NOT under deer crossing signage due this WV standard link

Yes the out of state tourists are a pain, but when they stay they are worse! :thumbsdownsmiley:

I recently ran the Skyline Drive from it's northern point of origin, heading south to hook up with the BRP. Got an early start ( 6:00 A.M. ) wanting to get to my Boone, N.C. house ASAP. After about an hour of riding, I had to stop and gather my senses and restore my courage to continue. It seemed like every dear within 100 miles had amassed just to attack me. They literally came at me from every direction. At one point, I had actually slowed to no more than 10 MPH....hoping I could get through the area in one piece. I realize I was in their " homeland " but, crap, this experience was almost unbelievable.

Let's see what a cager thinks when one of those suckers comes through the windshield. There needs to be a cull. This is natural but rejected by the great mass of uninformed. Basically no cull they start starving in great numbers and die in a way that is not pleasant. When this happens they are all over the place trying to find food and water. This is not good.

Any way I am sure there are naturalists out there that will comment on the aforesaid

Having hit one 5 years ago on a motorcycle... going 55+, I can say... Not fun!!

Living in VA, 15 min. from Skyline drive, they're all over the place...during hunting season, they're even more "mobile".

Any time you want a group of hunters to come over from California and Zap them for you Call Me!

Larry Grodsky

Here's an article about Larry Grodsky, Rider Mag "Mr. Safety". He died earlier this year after hitting a deer. He had told his wife just months before his death that if he were to be killed while riding, it would be from a deer accident, not a car accident.
