Larry (Mudarra) asked me to set up a ride to the Devil's Triangle, located North West of Knoxville.

I am getting a little twitchy from not riding as much now that it is getting cold. So to start off the new year I wanted to do a Polar Bear ride but not jump in any cold water, just ride in the cold.

Since a lot of us are doing the IMS in January let's do the ride on February 23nd, that is close to March and should not be too cold down here.

Time frame would be to come in on Friday February 22 and spend the night. Get up and leave out at 10am for the ride and get back around 3pm for either driving back home or eating dinner and driving back the next morning on Sunday.

We could use the motel in Sweetwater as our base, it is just off of I-75 so anyone trailering can drive there.

Phone # is 1-423-337-3541

I haven't reserved any rooms since the owner is a biker and offers bikers a special rate.

The ride is about 200 miles long taking about 5 hours.

I didn't think that was allowed in this group... :)

It is, but talk about a dog pile!

Calabash: I'm interested in the ride, it will all depend on work schedule. I'll keep an eye on this thread for updates.

Thanks,

JW

Man, I'd surely like to get in on this ride. Been wanting to do the Devil's Triangle for awhile. That's a good ways to ride for an overnighter, though. If I went that far, I'd like to explore for at least 2 days b4 going home.

I'll be watching this thread to see if it might mutate into a solid 2 day ride.

Possible second day ride: Go East to the Dragon and Cherohala Skyway, 150 miles, around 4 hours ride.

That's a possibility, I suppose. Personally, I'd rather not ride the Dragon ever again unless they've finally got a handle on it &/or troopers have left the area for the most part. Now, the Cherohala? I luv me some Cherohala!

Anyway, I don't want anyone to alter plans for me. I'll keep up w/ the thread to see if there is a possible morphing.

I really do want to ride the Devil's triangle, though. I've had this one highlighted in an atlas for well over a year.

I'm with you there, but Tenn HP is working Cherohala with the same vigor as The Dragon. When one clears they both will be.

Posted at The Dragon is 30 mph. I was amazed at how much fun running exactly 30 mph could be. Feels like crawling on the straight sections, but if you concentrate on maintaining exactly 30 mph, no matter what!, it can be an interesting challenge. We just completed it a couple weeks ago and I managed to make it the entire length without touching the brakes (cager encounters excluded of course).

If the Day-2 ride could become Day-1, then I could make the whole thing over four days. But a trailer to make it through Bambi land in the dark would be a definite must.

Calabash, I'm game for the ride if my seat makes it back in time. I have a production date of !/22 from Russell. If all goes well I'll see you there, if not, maybe next time. Would you mind if a Goldwing buddy came along?

Now, if this is gonna be a party, I'm in. If I don't go, who's gonna slow ya'll down?

Calabash,

I will send you some of the routes from my trip a couple of months ago.

Hmmmm... tempting. Average low in Feb. 29 Average High 52. Adjust for global warming and it will be about 80!

I think I'm in. It's only 4.5 hour to sweetwater. I'd definately be interested in staying 2 nights though.

Do they use radar or laser down there? The X50 is great at letting me know when there is a radar trap, but laser still scares me.

There's plenty of good roads around the Cherohala and Dragon where you can ride "brisk" then add either or both at the end of the day and ride them at legal speed. But I agree, if on a weekend day don't be tearing it up on either the skyway or Gap.

Pretty sure they use radar, one of my riding friends is a cop I'll ask to make sure.

Most of the patrols left after November 1st around the Dragon and Cherohala.

I don't think they would be hitting it too hard that time of year, it's not riding season. There won't be very many bikes during Feb. Might actually be a good time to do the dragon.

From Tail of the Dragon.com

"WINTER 2007-08: The season is slowing down so the Dragon is not very crowded if you want to come and enjoy the road just about to yourself. The chilly mornings and shorter days have reduced the good riding time to a few hours. Be alert with the shadows making it more difficult to see obstructions in the roadway. The sun can also blind you this time of year, especially in the afternoon.

Tail of the Dragon will continue to report on any information that might be of interest to riders/drivers, but weekly updates will not resume until late March. We will be having a few winter contests so watch the site for some interesting stuff. Be sure to check-out our Holiday Sales.

The next few months are a great time for cars to have some unobstructed fun here. Many of the local motels and vacation rentals have plenty of open rooms in the fall and winter. Remember .... the Dragon is at a low elevation (under 1800 feet) and is clear most of the winter. The Ceherohala, Blue Ridge Parkway and US 441 are over 5000 feet and can be tricky at times with ice and snow. Check on conditions before trying these roads."

Good tip about cherohala, probably be good to hit that later in the day once the sun is up for a while!

But a trailer to make it...

Ahhhem, should we expect any less from Trailer Queen Ashe? ;)

But seriously, I didn't realize that the Cherohala is receiving the same scrutiny as the Dragon. THere are so many good roads around there. I don't expect it'd be difficult to make a 2nd day ride not using eith of these roads.

umm, other good roads right there; my favorite is 28, south all the way to Walhalla; once that far south, you have to hit warwoman road west to Clayton, GA. There's also Wayah Bald road that runs from 129 (south of Robbinsville) south to Franklin, NC (best run heading North, imho). goodness, let's ride...

The trailer is the only way tires survive as long as the do with Jeff!!
