I find that when trying to remove the hard bags on my new 08 that I have to pull up real hard on the latch and then I hear a "pop" and it releases and comes off (happens on both sides) is this normal?

Mine have a "pop" also, but nothing that is discerning. They may be a little stiff being brand new. Actual alignment may be somewhat off. Are they good and tight when the latch is engaged? Mine wiggle around some but they haven't fallen off yet.

When I picked my 08 up in January the friendly dude in service explained that they

do sound like they're breaking, it's a bad sound. But he said it is normal when new

and lo and behold the little manual that came with the bags states this very same thing.

hope this eases your mind.

Yep! That's normal.
My 05 never popped... my 08 pops!

It means the fit is tighter and it isn't a bad thing unless it BREAKS when it pops.

Don't take the darned things off and it won't POP! Sorry, I couldn't resist. I run mine most of the time, but like to pull them for cleaning and the occasional "spirited" ride.

Nothing wrong with a little pop now-and-then.

Conversely, leave tem OFF.

I have a smuggler on my bike and I don't often have the bags on for day rides.

Mine 'popped' when they were new. They 'click' now.

Its just a high spot on the cam molded into the release lever and it will wear down with use.

Thanks "John"

Mine make the uncomfortable popping sound as well.

There's a pretty fine line between a "pop" and release....and a "pop" and no release. The latter, I learned, means a gear slips a cog and makes the bag so it could come off. I had to have one replaced.

I found a little WD-40 in the top where the piece rises up helps a bit...as they can get full of grit and crud.

Yes, my bags did the same for the first few times. Now it's more of a click. When I first got the bike, I thought I was going to break off the handle.

EXACTLY! Keep that point clean. And if you live on a dirt road, or dusty conditions, do NOT use D or any other dust magnet. I travel 6 miles of dirt daily, and found that dry graphite, delivered wet via aerosol can then allowed to dry, keeps the grime away and significantly reduces the 'pop'. I used the stuff that NAP sells. Oh, be judicious in the application, OK?

You know...it wasn't actually me that sprayed stuff. When I took the bike into the dealer I bet they used some brake cleaner or something to clean out the gunk. Strike the WD-40. Makes more sense.... ;)

Don't know if it's normal or not - but mine's exactly the same. Sounds like it gets better after a few uses.

Today I rode with the bags off for change - I love the way the FJR looks without 'em!
