Work and family have kept me from putting many miles on my 14 es or getting it to the dealer for the check. I figured I'd at least change the fluids and catch the rest later.

Got to work on the drain plug and while it was tight with a little effort it popped loose, not near as bad as the first change on my 07.

Went to take the filter off and while I can usually get enough grip with my hand I could not move it. Got out the trusty strap wrench and it still would not break loose! So I leaned on it a little harder and the filter collapsed WTF!

Ended up using a punch and chisel not pretty but got it done. On to the final drive

Plugs out draining, very dark and smelly and as the last drops hit the pan I'm thinking man that doesn't look like much poured it into a measuring cup and got just over 4 oz ? just a little over half of the required amount! Just a tiny amount of magnetic dust on the drain plug.

So much for the pre-delivery checks.Has this happened to anybody else? Maybe the drain plug guy got promoted to filter installation but the fluid level really makes me wonder.

Sorry no pictures

Yes, but not the collapsing oil filter. Mine came off with a cap wrench. Oh, and I did my 600 mile fluid service at 350 since I read waiting until 600 would give you the results you found. I also changed them again at 1250 then every 4k miles thereafter.

Sure glad I did not wait any longer think I'll do the final drive again at 1000 just for peace of mind.

Same experience here. Torque wrench on my oil drain plug, finally broke free at just under 70 ft lbs. Final drive not over tightened but dirty magnet. Figure I'll change it again in another 1k miles. Oil filter off with a cap wrench, couldn't remove it by hand. I like to do as much of my own maint as I have time but have a good dealer locally when I can't, who I trust.

Why are you guys doing diff oil changes every 1k? Just ride the dammed things and stop stressing out about stuff that shouldn't be stressed about. Read the owners manual and follow the schedule there.

You'd think this was a BMW or something with all the attention being paid to the rear drive fluid ;-)

I had the dealer do the 600 mile svc and I did my own at 4000 miles. I do not know if they torqued the drain plugs but they were not difficult to remove. The final drive fluid was very clean. The drain plug had no metal filings. I always clean the plug with break cleaning spray and look for any metal material on the magnet. I switched to Amsoil products on both engine oil and final drive gear oil. I am OK with 4000 mile intervals. With synthetic lubes I see no need to shorten the service intervals.

Not planning on 1000 mile changes and hope to be putting more miles on soon, but the short fill from the factory makes me wonder. Don't you thing the fluid levels would be a bare minimum for dealer prep?

But then there were three new Peterbuilt tractors we took delivery of in 2010 dry trans and drive axles.

Hey Wheaton I still appreciate your offer for a ride from Midway when I picked up my 07 in St Charles. Hope to meet some of you on the road someday

The Yamaha oil filter 'wrench' fits perfectly on the end of the filter, it's not expensive & can save lots of frustration.

I use a 6-point socket for the drain plugs, no risk of stripping the bolts.

Not a problem...that's what us Forum buds do for each other. Can't help with that offer any more though, I'm about 700+ miles south and east of Midway nowadays.
