OK, in addition to the new laptop hard drive (which went smoothly thanks to your help), I just finish building a new desktop. I installed a 25 in 1 card reader in one of the floppy slots on the front panel.

When I booted up the computer, that card reader was plugged in, and now my primary hard drive is labeled H: because the various card readers are labeled C: D: E: & F: with the CD/DVD drive labeled G:

I don't give a rip what the CD/DVD or card readers are called, but I want my damn hard drive to be C:

When I go to manage the drives, it says I can't relabel the H: drive. Do I have to start all over again? It took 2 hours to format the 500GB drive. I don't wanna wait that long again. Is that my only option?

Give me a call at 707-224-9262 and I'll go through it with you.

Jeff

Jeff, thanks for your help! It was nice talking to you and sorta kinda meeting you.

I went the route we discussed, and all is in order now (at least on its way to being in order)!

Thanks again for your help!

Would you care to share the info/remedy? because I have a hard drive that has the partitions 'arse-about-face' as far as drive labels are concerned.

Cheers

We discussed using Partition Magic and the like, but considering this was a fresh install and I hadn't dedicated too much time (other than the formatting), I'd just start over. So, I put the XP disk back in, and deleted the partition and re-formatted the drive using the quick NTFS instead of the slow one.

Oh, and I disconnect the card reader until after I had my hard drive and CD/DVD identified.

Now my hard drive is C:, my CD/DVD is D: and the card reader drives are E:, F: G: and H:

Norton's Partition Magic is a pretty good tool to have when using larger hard drives. Even after your drive(s) are set up and in use you can still adjust partition size as well as adding, removing and renaming logical drives.

For the first time I recently purchased a pre packaged computer instead of doing a 'roll your own'. I really didn't like the way they set up the hard drive, but it only took a few minutes with PM to sort things out. Some of the things that have effected partition size has been Microsoft software that does it the MS way and FU if you want it different, porky games and the evolution of my digital cameras causing picture size to grow from 75k/pic to 8meg/pic  Space hogs!

Let's all give jeff a call for some computer help. I think I'll call him whenever I come to work and let him know what the day's activities are going to be.

I'll bet that you'll use the PM feature next time you want to give out your phone number. :dribble:

Cheers for the repsonse/s

International dialing rates preclude me from ringing Jeff...but I have scratched it into the toilet door of every convenience I have found so far!

"For a good time...ring Jeff 707-224....." :good:
