do the side bags break

If not, then maybe the way to "protect" them is to put a removable, replaceable piece of plastic (or stainless perhaps) over the area what touches down (if only part of the bag touches) and replace it when it gets scratched up.

Yes (depending on the crash, of course) -- the 'horns' that hang them from the frame beak-off (or, partially break-off).

Especially, if the crash is extensive enough to hurt you. Kind of a 'parallel' there, I think.
