Riding in this morning, I was split at a red light, minding my own damn business, when all of a sudden... BUMP?!? :blink:

I thought for sure some a-hole was mad I was split, and bumped me on purpose. Nope. Some prehistoric dude in a new and quite humongous Tundra bumped in to my right saddlebag. I thought for sure I was gonna have to go, till I noticed the guy was at least 2x Old Mike's age and didn't do it on purpose. He opened his window and said "sorry". Gee thanks dude.

Still! Why is a guy, who is 125 years old, and obviously can't keep hit foot on the brake driving a 6,000lb truck?? /rant

Luckily, it only put a surface scuff on the bag, which wiped right off. Could have been a full on tip over into the unsuspecting driver to my left. Suppose it's my lucky day. Maybe I should go play Lotto?

Oh, well if it's a Toyota, then it wasn't his fault. I'm sure it accelerated on its own... even with his foot on the gas brake.

By the way, I assume the risk of someone not seeing me and changing lanes. I also assume someone might get mad at me and turn on purpose. I don't assume (as in my cage driving) that the guy is too old and feeble to keep his vehicle from rolling. Guess I have something else to watch out for now. <_<

I must say though, I ALWAYS assume everyone is trying to kill me!... it's called defensive driving!

And that's exactly WHY the old and feeble are safer inside a tank. Crash? Roll-over? No problem - you're in a tank. YOU will be safer. Sad for the other poor schmucks who are sharing your road with you.

Yikes. Sorry that happened to you. Being from the other coast, I know little to nothing of lane splitting except that if you were to try it here, you can rest assured SOMEBODY is gonna get pissed and try to kill you!

Either way, keep a sharp eye and do all you can to avoid things. But, at the end of the day, I believe there are only so many steps one can take to be as safe as possible and there will be times when you just can't do anything about controlling all the variables. YMMV.

Back when folks were debating about how big and abnoxious SUVs are, I read something from a woman who drove one that made my blood run cold: "I drive a big car so that if I hit someone I won't get hurt."

A friend of ours is married to a terrible driver who shares this sentiment. She was in a minor accident way back when and now she is "afraid" to drive anything smaller than a humongotard SUV. Perfect... bad driver... in humongotard SUV because SHE is afraid!

I think it is the rest of us, specially the two wheeled variety, that need to be skeered. Very skeered!

I was very weary of lane-sharing (the politically correct way to say it and one of TWN's pet-peeves) when I moved to CA. I quickly realized the advantages to it and the fact that MOST (not all) drivers are accustomed to it and don't have a problem with it. I figured they would react like drivers in most other parts of the country probably react: "What gives that a-hole the right to get there before me?" They don't. In fact, most will actually move over to give you room. Anyway, I love it and will continue to do it until I have some good reason to stop. Of course, I am not "looking" for that reason to stop, so I'll continue to give a little respect to the guy who is sitting still and can't progress while I am riding down the center of the road.
