My FJR is in the shop right now, and yesterday it was 52 degrees!!!! So I took out the FZ1, even though its not registered. Now it is insured, just not registered. The whole time I'm thinking about how I need to avoid having a cop behind me. I made it the whole 200 miles with no instances. Great ride, the bike was great, still getting used to it. Sooooo different than the FJR. Lots of fun!

At an intersection, I saw another guy on a bike. He waves, I wave back. I look closer, it was Jagermeister. Go figure, what are the chances??? So we stop and pull over to shoot the ****, and take a look at the FZ1.

Next thing you know, a cop pulls over a truck and they pull right next to us. Now I'm thinking, oh crap, if he see's I got no plates, I'm in trouble. This wasn't your average cop either. State trooper, with the full getup, and the hat! You know he meant business. Then I realize, he pulled the truck over because, THE TRUCK HAD NO TAG!!! Now I'm really shitting, so chris (Jagermeister) stands behind the bike to block the officers view, and I start to move the bike so the rear is not facing him. "No this isn't too suspicious!"

Man that cop had a hard on for that guy too! Searched his car, checked all his lights, horn, turn signals.... By that time, I said, I'm outta here!

Then on the way back, what do I see behind me. Yup, lights on.... I am thinking ****, I am so stupid, I shouldn't have been out riding on something unregistered...

I pull over, and the cop zips right by me. :yahoo:

I went straight home, and put the bike up for winter!!!!

We'll get ya next time!!! :)

By the way, while it's certainly possible the trooper's reason for pulling over the truck was tags, there's likely more to the story if he did a search too.

some birdy told me that if you pull the paltes from one yamaha and put them on another and that is Ponyfool is in another state you just might slide because all officer will really see on his screen is YAMAHA :D

You are a criminal...so did you and jager get to chat or were you too distracted by the officer?

Yeah, swap the plates.... somebody I know does that... once in a while, like to test ride, or bring a recent purchase home.

It works... or so I've been told.

B)

Is the penalty for swapping plates any worst? If not, then it is a no brainer.

In New York, you get towed and 1 ticket for unregistered. If you have switched plates, you get another one for that. So it's the difference between 1 ticket and 2 tickets. Your choice. :gun:

Honestly, how many COPS would pick up on it? And no, I am not advocating breaking the law. Just posing a question.

I would imagine those that are knowledgeable about motorcycles that can tell the difference between one model Yamaha and another.

The thing is, what are the chances that you'll be pulled over in the first place with vs. without a plate.

And then, if you have a wrong plate on the bike and did happen to get pulled over, and you handed him the right registration for the plate (not the bike you're on) how many cops would know that the tuning forks mean Yamaha? How many would check the VIN vs the Reg on a motorcycle? Do they even look?

I honestly don't know. But it's pretty cheap to keep a bike registered year round here. It's the insurance that is spendy. You don't need to prove you have insurance to get plates in NH.

Switched plates can be a big deal. But, if the officer catches it, I would be surprised depending on the state. If it lists on the computerized registration "Yamaha FJR" or "Yamaha FZ1", then it'd be easier. Many states simply electronically report "Yamaha". When an officer runs the plates and show a Yamaha motorcycle belonging to John Smith and he has a Yamaha motorcycle being ridden by John Smith, he likely isn't going to go any farther. Although, there are officers who verify every VIN on every stop. In addition, if the plates are switched, but it's the same owner AND the bike is insured, it's likely not going to be more than a small ticket. In states where the registration is tied to insurance or taxes, then the tag switching is also evading other responsibilities, thus, a bigger ticket and likely a tow.

Thank you Scott. Keith, stop doing it :)
I know! I know!!! But it was 52 degrees and sunny in mid December. How could I not ride? I felt like such a hooligan. Black and yellow bike, black and yellow gear, 2 bro's exhaust with the baffles removed, and no plates. The inner squid took over a little. :D

I couldn't switch plates because the FJR is at the shop...

Cop arrives, bikes scatter. It was like being in High School again.

The bee is sweet, Keith. Just needs a plate on that bare ass!

In KY, improper and/or no Plate/Registration gets you a ticket, which is thrown out if you produce it later for the Circuit Court Clerk, even if date after the violation (and I know this because?). They take insurance more seriously.

The officer REALLY didn't like the guy in the truck; had kept him there over 45 minutes, when I rode by again later. The guy was hauling a trailer with a muddy backhoe (the kind that bounce down the road, spraying **** all over your windshield), so I got a smug satisfaction watching it. Literally, the dirt was falling off the trailer during the inspection. Hopefully, the guy got a "stupid ******" ticket.

Our loverly state has recently started reporting 'color'. It's required now when you renew your tags to declare the color of your vehicle. It's a pretty impressive array of colors they have not just blue, black, red, yellow, etc.

There are multiple 'shades' of each item.

That seems to be the new differentiator that helps the police figure out you've switched plates.

So what this means is that I now have to paint my horse trailer to match my landscaping trailer since they've been known to share plates on occasions. :/
