Going to replace my Sargent and looking at a Russell or Laam seat for a 2 month ride this fall. Will do a ride in to either of their shops in N Cali in a couple of months and just wanted to get some feedback. Looks like 3 weeks solo then 2 weeks two up and then another 3 weeks solo.

I have only tried the stock seat, Yamaha (gel) comfort and Russell. Of course the Russell was the end of my seat search.

The only way I could see someone NOT liking a Russell is if they didn't have an ass.

The Russel I ended up with on my ST1100 was fantastic!

Tested it on a 5 week Toronto - Alaska tour.

Probably going to get one for the FJR soon.

It does sit you up a tad higher though.

You can certainly get an ill fitting Russel, but even when they don't fit you the best they are still generally speaking way better than anything else, including the Sargent you're about to replace.

I used to use Beads/AirHawk with my Sargent. I still use the beads on the Russell but only got some air to the boys on hot summer days.

Over a 100k on my Russell for the FJR and had them on two other bikes before that. I would put one on the Wing if funds were avaliable.

Ralph, I did not like the Russell as much as my Rich's. That said, I had purchased it from Kuwadge "sp" from the forum here and the Rich's I had made especially for me. Did a ride in. I think given time, I could have come to like it well. Sold it to Wingshot and he is using and loving it, coming from a stock seat. Is this the 50-60-70 you talked about?

Fred

I have both, I like the Russell best for long all day riding and the Lamm for daily riding for better leg reach, I think the best bang for your bucks would be Lamm.

I went from stock to Russel on my HD years ago. No regrets. Heated is nice. Gonna get one for the AE soon as I can. I have not tried other seats, beads, airhawks, or sheepskins.

My Russell is great but needs a minor adjustment...... I would recommend if you can ride in to them, to do so and you'll be guaranteed a good fit. You're not that far away.

Depends on what you want out of your seat. I had Russell and it is very comfortable, no doubt. I find it locks me in place too much for what I like to do with the FJR, so I went to a Sargent. I haven't met anyone that has not liked a Russell for just comfort.

Yes, this is for the 50/60/70 ride. Leaving in late Aug. I am going to post a rough map of the route soon, which will include Hyder Ak, Sydney NS, Key West and San Diego, so I will be hitting all four corners. Marianne will meet me in Montreal to ride two up with me for 2 weeks down to Key West and then she will fly home from Miami.

I bought mine second hand, it's not built for a guy my size or height, and I still think it's the best addition to my FJR.

Can't wait to order one built for me!!

My $.02 Ralph. Take a ride down and see Seth Laam, best bang for the $$$ you'll find.

Mine's good for 1000+ mile days!

The thing I like about a custom seat is you can get it just the way you want it. I have a russell and it get more comfy with every long ride I go on. If you live anywhere close to russell, thats where i would go. If its not exactly the way you want it they will fix it no questions asked. Russell built my seat with my spirited riding style in mind. I didnt want just a seat that would be comfy all day, I wanted on i could still move around on in the twistys and they delivered.

Good luck

We have several 4500-5500 mile 12-14 day trips two up on our Russell and an 1150 mile SS1000 two up also. We never get off the bike and feel sore at all even after the SS1000. We love the seat. I have no experience with the Laam seat, so I cannot comment on that.

I have the Laam seat. Just got it over Thanksgiving and weather now is too miserable here to get many miles in. Probably only have 600-800 on it so far, but I would deal with Seth again tomorrow. I love it and know as it breaks in it will only get better. Half the price of a Russell.

I wouldn't wait till just before your trip to get the seat done as even with a ride in there may need to be some adjustments done and you don't want to be breaking in the seat on your trip. I had a russell and loved it but I had to send it back for an adjustment.

Not hijacking the topic but I read some of the above posts reference the Laam seat and it seems that for the "PRICE" it is a good seat but the best seat is still the russelll. Am I interpreting that correctly? I am looking to replace the seat on my 2013 and I am looking hard at the Laam but I want to make sure I am getting the best seat I can get as this is probably my last long distance bike.
