Does the AE bang into 1st gear when sitting still?

On an AE when you're sitting still, engine running in neutral, and you select 1st gear does the transmission bang in and the bike jerk forward a bit?

Just wonder if it behaves any different than an manual clutch model?

Only if you have the idle too high, or your hand twisting the grip. Otherwise it's very passive.

If you have it cranked up and drop the gear, it behaves pretty much like any other bike. I haven't really tried to "abuse" mine, but the YCCS has a pretty good idea what you want it to do and reacts accordingly. Personally, I am rather pleased with the way Yamaha has the YCCS set up.

 
Mine "clunks" a little more than I was expecting, but not alarming.

The warm idle is 1040-1090, which I have considered lowering a skosh, to see if it helps engagement.

Nope, Mine does not providing it is warmed up. If I start and go with no warm-up, it will make a small clunk whne engaging first (nothing like my 04), but it does not creep.

 
When warmed up, you can hear it go into first, but the bike won't move. Now, when it is cold, it feels more like a regular bike and you can feel it a little bit. Of course, when it is cold temperatures, the clutch is not super smooth pulling away from a stop either......

I would say that the AE clutch is always dis-engaged when idling. Like always squeezing the clutch lever. This would give the clutch plates more time to overcome the small friction from the oil that keeps the transmission drive shaft turning. I have an A model and when I am about to put the bike into gear, either just after starting or at a light, I blip the throttle a couple of times with the clutch pulled in. The blips "break loose" the clutch plates and stops or slows the tranny drive shaft enough to engage the gears easier. It doesn't take much and it goes into gear much easier.

 
He only asked if you could feel it "bang" into gear from neutral. As said before, you can feel it shift when it is cold.

You are correct partially. The AE will disconnect the engine from the rear wheel, but there has to be two things happen. You either have to be stopped or rolling very nearly to a stop, and at idle. Anything other than idle and very slow speed or below, it stays engaged. There is certainly no blipping the throttle on an AE unless that big green neutral light is on.

With all gear on & on bike, ready to ride, try starting it in neutral w/clutch squeezed & instantly (after it starts) put it into 1st gear & ride off. At least mine doesn't jerk this way...Later,,,De :)

The OP was asking about the AE, therefore, no clutch lever to pull in !

I always start my '04 FJR in 1st gear. Before I start the engine I roll the bike out of the garage in 1st gear. This breaks loose the clutch plates to make it easier for the starter motor. I don't let the engine warm up. I jump on, pull in the clutch, start the engine and drive off. Might as well be going somewhere while the engine warms up. Helps the gas mileage too. Warms up quicker too since it's doing some worthwhile work moving me down the road.

 
Mine bangs into 1st year but does not move. Idle is at 1000 rpm even. If I stop in 2nd or 3rd gear for some reason it is really hard getting the gears down to N or 1st with the hand shifter? It happened after ridding to Long Beach for dinner with the wife on back. It took me a while to get it into gear.

slightly lower the idle rpm at normal operting temperature to 950 rpms. that should stop the not going into 1st gear after stopping in 2nd-3rd. This helped my AE. hope this is helpful.

I've found this occasionally. Do the same as you'd do if it was a normal shift, just push the bike a couple of inches with your feet, then try again. This works for me.

Of course, if you are in no big hurry, the electric clutch will cope very well with a 2nd or 3rd gear start (I've even done a 4th!).

 
Thank you both for the advice, I sure it will come in handy. There was a local sportsbike in my area who will look at the FJR very differntly from now on. He jumped on it and went into a tuck. I responded and took the bike to redline in all gears but 5th. I started slowing after I passed him doing 145mph on Sand Canyon. Damn that bike it fast!!
