A while ago I posted a thread about upgrading to a goldwing or keeping and modding my FJR. I've decided to mod the FJR.

Hellcreep chimed in (BTW, AWESOME paint job!) with some very good ideas and I'm trying to learn from his "mistakes" (I'm sick and tired of learning from my own!). He suggested that next time he would wire everything to a fuzeblock in a tank bag so everything was in one specific spot and the bike would have a nice clean look for daily commuting, and a tank bag would hold everything necessary (including connections) for the long trips.

So I'm wondering what is a good tankbag that will hold it's structure, and how safe it is to have a fuzeblock in a tankbag. I'm figuring on adding a Starcom1 Digital, wiring for my Garmin 2710, an aux output or 2(for a cartype power adapter), and I'll have a few spots open for some other stuff should I decide. Right now, the bike I bought (used) has some sort of outlet that was used with a widder vest. That's wired directly to the battery so I'll be looking for some sort of adapters that allow the fuzeblock to be put to it, and also an adapter to use for a trickle charger which I hopefully won't ever have to use (I intend on riding ALL the time!).

So are there any tankbags that woud be conducive to this? I'm looking for one that will be safe, waterproof (or at least have a waterproof covering), maybe a waterproof map holder for me to put a phone or ipod in so I can still access pushing buttons but it'll be safe from rain, maybe something that won't blow up in my face, a slow burning material perhaps, and anything else you can think of. Also, it doesn't have to be too big. Just big enough to hold my garmin and a few other small things. I use the luggage for anything big.

I'm gonna add it to the list, I have about 9 months to keep an eye out for sales and buy and have it shipped to my woman's house. Gonna build up the stuff I wanna put on, have a few things done by a local shop when I get home that I can't do myself, and then ride/mod/ride/mod/etc. Something REALLY great to look forward to!!!!

So any advice? Anything you'd do different? Hellcreep planted a great seed about having a centralized hub keeping a clean bike and, as he put it, removing the "ritual" of preparing for a ride. And I have no problem with working with someone's idea. ESPECIALLY if it's a good one.

[EDIT] - Sorry about the placement in the wrong forum. My bad![/'EDIT . .. hehehe]

The German made SWMotech/Bags-Connection [check Twisted Throttle dotcom] have an interesting methodology for bag mounting/bag powering that you might find appealing. But, if you really want to put together a real network in your tankbag, I'd suggest you talk to the good folks at RKA [rka-luggage dotcom, ...I believe], they'd be the real source on this topic!

Were it me to do over, I'd first call Call Keith Goudelock (pr. Godlock) at Tulsa Truck Center 918.446.2245

He is the master who will lead you to enlightenment, and cut you a deal at the same time.

I have everything wired under my seat, J&M system, ZUMO 550, IPOD. I like to be able to remove my tank bag and go without it if I like. I also like the fact that the fuse block is protected. Just my point of view. Do what you feel best for you.

If you want to check out the way RKA did it for ideas, including RAM mounts on the bag, their web site is here.

In general, though, I'm with DJB. Sometimes I don't want the tank bag. Sometimes I don't want the other stuff. And I want my zumo on something more substantial than a tank bag (I use a stem nut mount).

I can't imagine, though, that hooking up a fusebox in the tank bag would be that big deal. Getting power in is easy enough. Powerlet even makes a socket specifically for that. Just put a hole in the bag, screw it on, you're done. I guess you'd want to be careful about what else you put in there so you don't create a short, but other than that, I can't think up much of an objection.

By the way, here's that Powerlet tankbag socket installed on a small Nelson-Rigg bag of mine. Jeff at bikeeffects.com sells all the Powerlet stuff and offers a forum discount.
