Don't buy a Zumo 550 or 660 anymore

My 550 died. It recently quit working on the way to Alaska. One of the electrical brass pins in the mount disappeared and thought that to be the problem. They sent me a new mount in Anchorage. Still didn't work. I have spent way tooooooo much time on the phone with them, mostly because I was on the road. Wait time is about 35 mins each time you call. Had it hooked up to a laptop once. Bottom line, about $150 to refurish. An expensive venture, considering I don't use bluetooth or weather. I may purchase a cheap gps and throw it in my tank bag. Probably should have done that in the first place.

Funny thing is, other than finding a couple of places in Anchorage, I don't miss it!!!! I am a better driver without it. Tend to mess with it while riding.

...and connnections for the new Xbox 360 mobile

OOooh, that would be really cool. I'm tired of playing my Gameboy while riding.*

* Also a joke. Apparently, that needs to be pointed out around here.

What's wrong this place lately? A guy tries to give us a simple tip and people crawl all over his ***. Did Bud start mixing the beer with ******* juice? Fer crissakes, try a stress reduction class or something.
Another sympathizer at last, lol

A big thanks to Ig, who moved the post to neprts. That should help make this go away

He actually said it's a bad idea to delete the thread because "some people" will start whining about censorship. After seeing responses to this post, I don't doubt it.

GROUP BUY: Chill pills! ;)
I think this groups has consumed to many pills already.

...the "I work for Tomtom" comment was a joke*! I guess you didn't read the rest of the thread, in which I actually fessed-up the truth...
I guess I missed the post in which you stated your tomtom comment was a joke.

Yes, I did read the thread; soooo where was it?

If you know someone at Garmin, ask him or her why they won't stand behind the crappy 550 bike mount that they sold me? An "improved model" to me would simply be one that the company would back, not state that there were "no systemic issues", while replacing scores of them.
Garmin! Bah!!!
I have to retract this one. After finding out today that Discover wouldn't double my warranty, (it only works for things purchased with the card after February of this year), I decided to give Garmin one more crack at getting this one right. Customer Service Roulette indeed, and today was my lucky day. Although he said there were no known issues with the 550 cradle, we updated the SW, and did a couple of other tweaks, and it seems to be static free. He sent me an email, saying that if it craps out, to reply back to him directly, and he would get me a new cradle. That is customer service; it's just too bad I wasted so much time with the first Garmin rep I spoke with.

That is the first time I have heard of bad Garmin customer service.

The whining about Garmins pricing (insanely high, I agree) is understandable, but it's only an issue when one insists on having the latest and greatest. For the savvy shopper, a refurb or model at the end of it's marketing life is a real bargain. I scored a 2730, a perfectly awesome GPS, for under $175 WITH XM etc, then scored the lifetime map updates for another $114. I'm set for quite a while with a unit that began life at $1200 plus, and was the Greatest GPS Evah!!!! just a couple years ago. Oh, and I usually use it after I've gotten myself lost, to get me home when I'm getting beat. The best of all worlds.

+1... my modus operandi exactly. My 2820 was a fraction of the original cost, and should last me for quite some time.

My riding buddy has one and really has only used it to find an occasional ATM machine, and he rides all over the USA. <_<

My cell phone has a GPS, can contact folks around the planet, can go "online" and surf, has expandable memory, it plays MP3's , has a radio and even has a 3 mp camera..... all for about 100 bucks.
Come out with a GPS for my bike that does all that with a large readable screen for even twice that price and I'll consider the upgrade.

KM
I'm pretty sure part of your monthly bill goes to subsidizing the initial cost of the cell phone, sorta like inkjet printer cartridges.
