So, Cdog has been making cool wfo routes available and I've been playing with the new zumo 550.

Questions for all you Zumo egz-sperts..

1. When you open a route in mapsource, it has the option to 'Select maps around the route'.

? What does that really do? I notice that it creates indexes, calculates traffic patterns, etc.

?? Are the maps needed for the zumo to get you back on course should you stray?

2. Is it possible to download all 7 maps in one USB connected 'session'? I haven't been successful in doing all, serially, in one usb connection. If I try, only the last downloaded map appears on the Import screen after disconnecting the usb from the pc.

3. If the maps are saved along with the route, e.g. on one of the rides, two states are crossed. Selecting maps around the routes then apparently downloads the data for those two states.

? Does this decrease the number of routes you can then save to the Zumo?

4. I notice that all routes get saved to the zumo main memory.

? Is it possible to save routes to the added sdhc card?

Well, that's enough for now.

Learning is always not fun.

Doesn't really apply to the Zumo since it already has them all ;) But I think you figured that out.

Again, forget this forget downloading maps, just download waypoints, tracks, and or routes ;)

Yes, older units like my Quest one could only hold so many maps, so you'd plan a route and send down the maps that you wanted.

4. I notice that all routes get saved to the zumo main memory. ? Is it possible to save routes to the added sdhc card?
yes, if you have an SD card, you can put them in a folder on that card. The downside though, is that every time you boot up your Zumo it will see them and ask if you want to import them.

This is how the sharing feature works.

You create a route (however, using map source or on the Zumo). You hit the share button and it copies it to the SD Card. You give SD card to other zumo enable dudes and they import the route ;)

I don't know off hand what the internal storage limit is, but I bet it's more than one needs for most trips.

Hope that helps.

Thanks Renegade! I'm a techie like you and couldn't sleep just wondering about all this new-to-me technology so I ended up at zumofourms.com reading and reading.

Here's what I've learned so far.

1. Do NOT upload maps to the z550.

2. If you have uploaded, you need to access the Garmin folder and delete the file created by uploading the maps.

3. You can download more than one ROUTE per usb connection session. In my earlier post I mistakenly called it maps not routes, my bad. To download multiple routes, you have to use mapsource to open each route, e.g. multiple instances of mapsource, then cut and paste the route from each instance to the target instance.

4. Most folks copy the entire contents of the Garmin folder to their pc as a back up strategy.

5. To save room for more routes, most folks have been deleting all the languages in the Garmin folder they don't need.

Both of those are excelent ideas, and honestly had not occurred to me.

I actually prefer one of the British English voices. :)

But could do without Germain, Russian, French and all the others ;)

And yeah, zumoforums is a pretty good place.

+1 (sorry GunMD).

I thought you actually had to download the other languages from the Garmin site. In fact, I was going to download the Brit female just for kicks. Never occurred to me that they might be stored there already. I'll have to check that out this evening -- if I can get the unit back from my wife.

Here is how I do it

Open the mapsource file that has the route in Mapsource. Blow the routes contained to the Garmin. Open the next one. do the same. until all have been blown to the Garmin

Open a fresh mapsourse DB and suck them all off of the thingy in a single session and you have the whole tamale in one place.

The way I made theme was to do them all in one place, Save the file. Kill all but one, Save as, Close and reopen master file and repeat

I dont know if that is easier but I made it up and it worked.?? :dribble:

? Is it possible to save routes to the added sdhc card?
YES!

I put routes on my sd card in a GPX format. A single GPX file can hold mutilple routes and the file must be placed in a special folder (actually two folders deep). \Garmin\GPX (that is to say a GPX folder inside the Garmin folder).

If they are new files you will be prompted as to whether you want to iimport the new data. Whether you do or not, you will not be prompted again. However, you can go into --- Tools (wrench icon) -> user data -> Import Data --- and select data to import. The importing is rather slow compared to pushing it in with MapSource.

Why I use GPX - GPX is a generic XML format that allows me to share and use data in non-Garmin mapping programs and to share it with non-Garmin GPS users.

Mapsource allows you to save your routes in GPX format. Go to menu --- File/Save as --- in the Save As dialog pick GPS eXchange Format as the Save as file type.

One of my uses is to download my track files after a trip and save it in a GPX format. I open the file in Google Earth and enjoy the ride again from a birds eye view tour. (This requires having the $20 upgrade on Google Earth). Pretty neat.

Did I state that clearly??? <_<

I have a GPX file with the routes posted in the WFO section if you want to try it out.
