Get a hold of garauld, score a set of his aux light brackets for your Gen I.
Then surf over to AdvMonster, and score a set of the Model 60 CREE LED lamps. These *******s put out 3200 lumens, *each*!
Forum member Alex used to sell these lamps, but I can't find them on his site nowadays. AdvMonster has 'em for $200/pair, and use the discount code "inmate" when you check out to save a cool 10%.
+1 on the ADVmonster LEDs. I run a set of the model 60 floods and a set of the model 30 spots. I have the floods aimed straight ahead, and the spots aimed so they cross at about 300 yards. While the spots are only 1500 Lumens compared to the 3600 lumens of the floods they throw light just as far in a tighter pattern. On a dark highway at night, I light up road signs 1.5 miles down the road. Usable light extends to about a quarter mile when it's really dark out.
I use the remote dimmer to control the LEDs, and they are relayed off the headlight relay, so they come on with the headlights. Then the controller highbeam bypass is connected to the highbeam wire. I run the LEDs at about 20% with the low beam, and they go to full power with the high beams.
Note on the Garauld mounts, they vibrate badly with a heavy light setup like this. I was lucky enough to score a set of the old BLM brackets for mine. If you do get a set of the Garauld mounts, drill new mounting holes as close in as possible to reduce the vibration.
While Justin makes a good point, I will say that the one Model 60 flood I have mounted on the right (deer-side) garauld bracket is rock-solid, even when going over potholes/railroad tracks, etc
I have a second Model 60 coming from AdvMonster, slated to arrive the night before the next reconn run back into Montana this Friday. Hate farkling immediately before a road trip, but not on this case.... can't have too many lumens in the inky night-time blackness of Montana...
