Well...Crud! My wife and I were out on a short ride when I stopped at a tourist attraction of sorts. I was forced to stop on a left decline, and the extra weight was too much for my skinny legs to handle. It could have been worse, scratches on the bag, and engine, Wife's skinned elbow, my bruised ego. Oh well, hopefully she'll ride with me again.

BUMMER, DUDE. HAVE ANY FRIENDS WHO PAINT CARS? I COULD GET THAT FIXED LOCALLY FOR $100.

I guess I've crossed over now, I'm more into the Skooter/Warchild bike look. As in torn up, worn out, it is what is kind of thing. After taking all that time to wash, wax, dry and clean.. Bambi just wipes it all out in .02 seconds. Now, I'm just going to ride the thing and proudly display battle scars.

I'll keep the Harley nice, though..

Sorry to hear it......................Do you have sliders installed??
Sliders - the 5mph bumpers of motorcycles. Might have saved the engine cover, but not the bag.

I have a set on mine, though, never tested.
Dude, don't let it get you down. When 600 lbs. starts to go, it goes. Wouldn't it be great if they made handlebar pushbotton airbags that popped up when it started to go over?

Good idea.....maybe we can get skyway to start working on that farkle.

Sorry to hear about your misfortune.

About your wife's skinned elbow... was she wearing riding gear? I'm guessing not or there prolly would not have been skin loss from a parking lot drop. Maybe this was a gentle reminder that you (both) need to be wearing more gear, even when it's hot. I know that when it's really hot I've been known to ride the back roads in a tee shirt too, but you never know when you're going to go down.

Ya pays yer money and ya takes yer chances...

If an elbow was skinned from a drop, imagine what would happen had you been doing say 10mph.......

Sara's arms would be hamburger if she wasn't wearing a jacket when we went down 2up. Shit does happen out there...

As for dropping it, your joining a rather large list of people who have done the same. The bag can be repainted, but paint from colorite is a freeking fortune. I think there are some alternative paint options listed in the bin'o'facts.

You could get a new crank case cover, or just get one of those carbon fiber looking covers.

Sorry to hear about it, it hurts your ego more than anything else.

Either that, or why doesn't someplace like Skyway make a set of long "sliders" for the rear of the bike to protect the bags? Let's face it, the FJR is very top heavy and prone to lay on its side resting whenever it can.!

I don't mean this in an offensive way, but since we're kinda thread drifting IMHO here anyway between Fred & Keithbaba's posts, so I'll drop in my $0.02.

As motorcyclists, aren't we sort of "don't tread on me individualists" to a point already? Don't legislate what kind of bike I can ride, don't tell me X, don't tell me Y. Yes it's a risk to ride a m/c as opposed to a car, but it's my choice. That kind of thing?

I'm a MtoATGATT guy (that'd be MOST to ALL of the gear all the time). And while I respect the ATGATT opinion, not all of us choose to ride that way. And while it's incrementally a less safe way to ride, it's a choice, much like riding a motorcycle versus a car.

Anyway, it seems to me that I'm seeing a fair amount of holier than thou ATGATT preaching in the Forum lately. Poor FNG posts about tipping his bike and folks gotta take him to task for what he and his wife chose to wear on that ride. And while I'll recognize it as concern for a fellow-rider's well-being, it still strikes me as about as appealing as when the Jehovah's Witnesses show up on my doorstep. I'll make my choices and they're my informed choices about the risks of the gear I choose to wear. Let Farkelschnark do the same, I say. Your risk, your choice.

Anyway, again, no offense intended, but we're old enough to make our own decisions on that topic here. I see the same risks you do, but I'm not gonna wear ATGATT. And I like oatmeal lumpy--you smooth oatmeal folks don't know what you're missing. :bleh:

Actually, in my post I said that that I do the same thing sometimes (against my own better judgement) and "Ya pays yer money and ya takes yer chances..." How could that be construed as "Holier than thou"? I was just pointing out the obvious risk reductions, especially since the OP didn't know if his SO would ever ride again with him...

Sweet, and it's not even friday yet!!!

No "holier than though," intended. Just 2 sentences, speaking from experience...

Sorry if it came off that way, however, the only reason I wear gear is because of this forum. I used to ride in jeans, t-shirt, glasses, and sneakers. Started wearing gear after reading on this site. Glad I did, as I crashed shortly after starting to wear gear!

Great, now were even more off topic.

Sorry about your bike, dude... Let us know what you do to repair it.

It looks like a good painter can get the sidebag right again.

And, IIRC, the engine cover (isn't that the clutch cover?) isn't very expensive or hard to replace.

I'm not gonna wear ATGATT
Might change your mind if you ever do a slide (amongst other acrobatic maneuvers) on the pavement... but that's ok w/ me if'n you don't do ATGATT. Definitely a personal decision.

Oh, I sure am sorry about the tipover, though. Happens to the best of us. Member, Garauld is known for working miracles on the painted parts. He comes highly recommended. Good luck

OK, maybe I picked the wrong moment, given your & Keithaba's relatively mild comments but IMHO I'm seeing more of it on the Forum. Like you say, "...ya takes your chances." It seems that some of the more preachy posts are unnecessarily divisive. Plenty of room for all, hmmm?

Back on topic, I like the crack about "5mph bumpers for motorcycles." They may look a bit silly, but if they save me having to replace/have painted the panels on my bike, it works for me. I've "tested" them once already and they didn't do a thing to save the left side cover, but they did save the panel. :yahoo:
