Sorry about your drop, but at least you have the honor (as far as I know) of being the FIRST 2008 FJR owner to drop his bike.

Yup, the first 08 to meet the ground (at least reported).

That sucks man, it's a horrible feeling. Fix the bag, leave the crank case cover alone. I still have my battle scars on the crank case to remind me not to do it again.

You can order just the lid, but would probably be cheaper to have it painted.

 
The stator cover is fairly inexpensive but a pain in the *** to change.

You are not alone.

I didn't sleep at all the first night I had mine, cause I dropped it the first 10 minutes I had it. Then the following month I dropped it on the other side. Both of my mirrors/bags are scratched along with my stator cover. I'll probably get them fixed someday.

But ya know what? I don't know about yours, but mine isan't a piece of garage candy. Mine takes some abuse. Just ask Fencer or Mutha1300. Yes it's true I'm still mad at myself about it but no one who has looked at the bike has ever mentioned anything about the damage.

IMHO, Take it easy on yourself, maybe on the cosmetic stuff wait a while and get some farkles first.

My most profound sympathies, Ralph.... I've spilt mine twice and I still have the break-in oil in it! It's embarrassing.... never dropped either of my two previous bikes once! Both times for me, I had no chance of recovery... both times going about 1 mph, and both times on my own property. Both times fell on the right side. Both times, I'm up one nanosecond; and down the next nanosecond. It happens before I can even think about reacting.

In desperation, even though I considered myself a good, experienced rider, I signed up for the LA Motorcycle Education Course next month, and I bought the "Ride Like a Pro 4" DVD. It seems pretty good; but it's only as good as the amount you practice what he teaches. I'm now using the "friction zone" technique at low speed, when turning, or when extra control or stability is needed and you're going slow. It combines slipping the clutch, giving it some throttle (~2500 RPM), and riding the rear brake a bit. I wish I'd have known about that a couple months ago! (That wouldn't have helped you, but it may help some other folks out there ... close the barn gate BEFORE the cow gets out!)

I spent a few hundred in tupperware from University Motors. They're definitely salt of the earth folks up there.... saved me hundreds of dollars.

Stator cover is only about $50. The magnet of the generator makes it hard to pull the cover off. You need a phillips head on something with serious torque to loosen the ground wire from the stator. Make sure you torque down all the bolts around the cover when you put back on. After I replaced mine, I found one bolt that backed itself back out almost all the way several months later. Don't forget to order a new gasket w/ the cover...

 
The suggestion to go with the Carbon Fiber cover is a good one. It is easy to install,it looks great and most importantly it will protect well in the event of another spill.

Bike Johnny is easy to deal with, even though they are in England.

 
Don't beat yourself up too bad, I've dropped every bike I've had and some didn't even have engines.
Personally I think the scratches give it some character.

Now thats what Im talking about! thank god mine is silver, cuz it has lots of character :yahoo:

When I changed mine out I had to use an impact wrench to loosen the screws holding the stator in the cover. It seems that Yamaha likes Loctite, too.
