Dry Hole!

I learned that lesson on my old 83 Venture several years back. I'd start getting some slight howling when the tire got about half worn down. After that it just gradually got worse as the tire wore. I thought my rear end was going out................... Untill I put new tires on, then it went away and I wiped the sweat off my forehead.

At least you now know that your gears are OK. It's nice to have something much less malicious to hunt down.
