This may be the dumb ass question of the day, but here goes.

I want to check my steering head bearing torque.

Is the nice, pretty, shinny, perfectly aligned nut between my handlebars the actuall nut to be tightened, or is this a pretty cover that has to be removed first?

Follow up dumb ass question:

Is it required to loosen the top fork clamps when you tighten the steering head bearings?

****** slap me if you must, but gimme the goods.

Yes, the nut must be removed first.

IIRC, you are not required to loosen the top fork clamp pinch bolts.

Scab, the entire triple tree needs to come off in order to torque the steering stem bearings to spec. It's the only way to fit the special steering stem wrench to the adjustment nut.

So yes, you'll be loosening the top fork pinch bolts (as well as the shiny steering stem nut, obviously) in order to remove the triple tree.

Thanks for the backup Mr. G., nice to know this boy got my back. I'm not even going to mention that I own the tool for this job. Must be that I forgot how to use it cause some other peeps had it in their possession for so long. :p

Oh, and by the way!

I thought I posted on this already? Oh, well, here goes again...

There are no dumb questions....just dumb answers. I.E. See the above two posts. Also, see any post I have posted to any question....should explain it all...... :p

If the bike is in warranty, take it to a good dealer. They may not have the tool themselves (don't ask how I know this) and you may end up doing this fix yourself. It is good to get the correct tool and do it right, otherwise you run the risk of damage to the bearings. More expensive fix than buying the tool.
