That sir, is a very dangerous thing to attempt! Think of all the laws that will be broken! It's a horrible example to set for or young people!

From the linked Article:

I then rode the 1098 from Toronto to Warren, Michigan, where the crew at Powerlet designed and installed custom mounts for my Passport 8500 radar detector and Garmin 2620 GPS. They also wired in a few accessory outlets that enabled heated riding gear to be run directly through my tank bag.

:dribble: Where do I sign up???
Heh... I would think it's more of a 'invite only' gig, though that is speculation.

In many ways, this is actually a daunting task. Gary is more than capable of doing, of course, but in *addition* to all his riding skills - which are considerable, mind you - he has to have Luck. If he doesn't have Luck, all his talents and the $$$ sunk into that Duck are for naught.

The kind of Luck that makes/breaks a big ride.... good weather, few road/traffic problems, minimal LEO presence, etc.

What I actually find pretty damn intriguing is the had bags they affixed to the 1098S... this is bad-ass potential for serious sport-touring fun!

WC, these folks are just down the road from you in Bend OR and can build a fuel cell of any shape or size you desire: Fuel Safe Racing Cells. Now just find some hard bags for that 'Busa...!

Edit: Duh... Notwithstanding that Gary mentions exactly where it was he had the fuel cells made. "Looky at all the pretty pictures, 'Monkey! Ooooooo, pretty motorcycle." I quit.

Damn, the schwing factor of this beautiful bike just caused my double rivetted levis to split.

I've always got a great kick out of Gary's rides and when he started kicking ass on the Multistrada I watched even closer. (I've always wanted a Multistrada) His sense of crazy adventure, ...combined with riding IMO one of the coolerest of bikes ...well it captured my imagination.

One of my best take-aways (among many) at WFO last year was spending a few minutes talking with Gary and trading stories. He rode up from SLC to see WC and a few others.

He was in real life, just what I expected from reading his trip reports (and of course those whacky audio files). And of course he was on the Multistrada. That brief time with Gary and the dialogue was a real treat for me.

....So great to see he's off on another adventure, and this bike looks like it can handle all that a wild-man like gary can dish up.

Good Luck Gary ....this hick from Nevada will be watching with a big grin. Watch out for those underage hookers on this trip :)

Ouch! Lookit that seat! Brings new meaning to the term, 'Iron Butt'... Good luck, Gary!

And RJ? Oh, no you dinnit just write, 'take-away'! For that, I'm going to have to present you with a jimmy kick of epoch proportions.

Like RenoJohn wrote, Gary is an absolute trip even without the bike. He is the funniest guy and walks the walk, too. As for his luck, who else could wreck a hundred miles from Prudhoe on a Prudhoe-Key West run, break bones, break the windshield, and then still make it to Key West in 100 hours? He attributes it all to prep and discipline and he's legendary at both. The prep on this 1098 shows more of that level of prep. I'm wondering what he's got for lights because he typically adds some big PIAAs.

As for breaking laws, he maintains that going too much over the posted speeds is too conspicuous and counterproductive, and to keep a steady pace that just keeps the bike moving as fast as reasonable.

After eye-balling these pictures a few dozen more times it occurs to me...

A topcase and a weeks worth of gear makes the FJR pretty wheelie happy....can you imagine tryin' to keep the bow of that 1098 on the ground under even moderate acceleration? YIPPEEEE!

Manhattan to Redondo Beach in less than 36 hours? What the hell is Gary thinking?

What he's attempting is not only crazy but impossible. It can't be done! It would be like trying to ride from Prudhoe Bay to Key West in 101 hours (no wait he's done that). It would be like trying to cross Canada in 51 hours (no he's done that too). Alright, what about riding over 2,000 miles in 24 hours (damn, he's done that)!

Oh, I know. What he's attempting would be like trying to ride more than 10,500 miles in 7 days. Impossible I tell ya! :)

It warms my cockles to know riders like Gary are out there pushing the limits. I wish him well and hope he's successful and avoids the "Massholes". Just wish I could toss a Star-Traxx onto his bike before he took off from NYC.

Maybe we'll get some more of those call-in's from the road.

I bet you I could make it to from Manhattan* to Redondo Beach in less time than Gary's allowing...

* Manhattan Beach, CA
