Ear Plugs

Here's the deal. Have the AutoCom Active 7 hooked up. Lorie and I both have the speakers in the helmets (I used the ER-6i for quite a while but got tired of the extra hooking up etc). Took Lorie for our first 2 up last Sunday (both wear 32db earplugs) and with the volume all the way up I can hear Lorie, but not all that great. Tried it last night in the garage w/no earplugs and the volume is just fine. Bottom line is I want to wear earplugs AND hear Lorie or Ipod, etc. Soooo...anyone have recommendations on earplugs that might let more through the speakers but still be good enough vs outside noise?

Jim I use an Autocom and for earplugs I just use the disposable orange foam ones you can buy at any pharmacy. I can hear my music without the wind noise. Cheap and works well.

All ear plugs do this. Any ear lug should allow you to hear voices but cut out other noises such as machinery. I would suggest finding a sample pack of different brands of ear plugs and finding out which one works best for you out of the pack. Ear plugs fit differently and offer different levels of audio protection.

Someone suggested that if you needed additional volume with earplugs that you can use a heated pin, nail,etc thru the middle of the earplug.

You might try a shooting range (indoor or outdoor). Most of them carry different styles/types of foam earplugs you could try. Also, Lowes and Home Depot (or any place that sells power tools) should have a selection of "throw-away" earplugs. Just try different types and attenuation until you find what works for you. The foam type are pretty cheap so a few bucks and lots of riding time to experiment.....

The ones I use look like these except they are made by EAR. They do a good job of keeping out noise, I can still hear the speakers in my helmet which are connected to my radar detector, and they are comfortable enough to wear all day with no problem. I find the foam ones bother me after a couple of hours.

My wife and I are in the same boat, Jim. I use some unknown cheap throw-away brand that works just fine except they usually make my ears hurt after a few hours. I haven't quite figured it out yet, but when they expand and fill the ear canal, they must push my ears a little and it causes the cartlidge on the outter ear to really get sore. If you find a good set for comfort, fit, and can still hear your wife, lemme know! I'll do likewise.

32 is the noise reduction rating (NRR). I find 32 to be way too high for motorcycling. Look for some in the 28 - 30 NRR range. Hearos are pretty good for the price, and MCN has always given them a good rating.

Thanks all. I'm going to go ahead and try the "Quiet Ear" plugs and some with less than 32 NRR. Will let ya know how it works out.

I use the following ear buds in conjunction with the helmet speakers.....Ear Bud Link.

I know this is similar to what you have been using but maybe a different fit will help. These have great sound and with the closed type style you get minimal air noise.

I run a Autocom Pro M1 with an adapter box for the ear buds.

Reggie, I'm a minimalist when it comes to wearing "stuff." I was using the ER6i earplugs/phones which worked great. BUT, I got tired of the extra couple of steps putting stuff back in/on when suiting up - especially after short stops and where others have to wait on me. PLUS, Lorie has the speakers and our AutoCom doesn't have separate volume controls for driver/rider (new ones do) and to get her volume right blasted the heck outta my ears. So I bit the bullet and stuck speakers in my helmet. Now just need to experiment to get the right amount of noise/wind blockage while still allowing ZZTop (and Lorie) to filter through!

While in Daytona, i purchased, some molded ear plugs, from an outfit called big ear.

i sat in a chair and they injected the stuff in my ears, about 45 min later, i had nice ear plugs that turn down in your ear.

you might see if a local sell them.

I think they were around 60.00

I just visited this now old thread, because I just got some new earbuds! When I 1st plugged them in with no sound, I thought everything was purty quiet. Then I turned on my CD player = OUUUCH!

I turned the volume down and then decided to plug the audio player into the Mix-It to see if I could hear the SOLO Escort Radar detector piped in through the Mix-It. Fired up the SOLO = OUUUUUCH!

I can't hear anymore because my eardrums are shattered! :blink:

The engine rev is peaceful compared to the ear rupturing pierce of those buds! Think I'll go back to my good 'ol orange No Name earplugs.

As much as I hate supporting Walmart, their pharmacy area carries three different rating ear plugs of various brands. They're kept with the other ear health items (wax remover, etc...). Usually they're around $2.50-$3.50 for ten pair of the 27, 29, or 32 db rating.

Just to report back, I got the QuietEar "sample" kit with S/M/L sizes. For me, these will go into the dustbin of history. I could Lorie talking great, I could also hear too much wind noise, etc. No matter what size I wore it felt like they weren't doing much of any sound deadening.

Your experience may differ, but for me these do not work.

you may want to get custom earplugs with the earphones built in-- that way you only hear the stuff coming thru the earphones
