So, I realize that this quake was small as compared to what the west coasters recieve on occasion but... us east coasters... well, we don't usually get this type of stuff. It's quite historic! We just had a 5.8 magnitude quake just a couple of hours ago. I do not remember an earthquake in the area... ever. & I've lived on the east coast my whole life.

So, where were you east coasters when the ground shook. Hope all the fellow FJR'ers in the area of the epicenter in Mineral.

I know that my house did a good shake & I'm about 130 miles away.

I spoke with my best friend in Lacey, NJ & they even got a good shake.

Yup, I knew about it as soon as it happened. I work for a National 911 Response Center and our Comm room lit up like the earth split in two. Why call 911? It's not like anybody can stop the shaking!

Regardless, it was felt this far north with government offices being evacuated. They had one in Colorado (Eastern Side of the Rockies) earlier in the day.

Holy crap is all I can say! It was not a good feeling having the floor move back and forth about a foot underneath me. I was at a power plant about 30 miles from the epicenter. My wife was gettimg thrown around in the house trying to get herself and her mother out. Very scary.

I tell you it scared the crap out of me, as i was switching out some Hydrogen tube trailers in Bladensburg MD (near DC).

It rumbled so loud & shook the ground , my trailers rocked back & forth. (thought something blew up at the cylinder fill place i was at.

Just realized what you said about the power plant, as i deliver Hydrogen gas to your place (Air Products driver) Stuff like this can give someone some racing stripes

I spent 15 years in Kali (10 in SD and 5 in San Jose), so I've felt my share of quakes. I was sitting at my desk at home this afternoon just south of Buffalo and it was very quiet and I happened to be sitting very still, staring at my computer trying to figure something out. I felt this slight side-to side rocking. Very slight, almost like the chair was just rebounding a little after I had shifted my weight...but I hadn't moved. Even here in WNY where we "never" get quakes, I said out loud to no one in particular "I think we just had an earthquake!" I didn't see anything else in the room wiggling, so I went back to what I was doing and promptly forgot about it...until I read the news sites this evening.

I see the National Cathedral lost a few bits off the top. Here's hoping no one has been too badly affected by this!!

I was working on the 14th floor of a condo building in Baltimore, when the entire building started shaking, followed by the neighboring condo unit owner barging in an cussing us out for knocking all the pictures off the wall. A few minutes later she returned with a somewhat reddish tint covering her face and apologized for her behavior and confirming it was an earthquake.

A little while later I heard on the radio "the quake was caused by the clashing together of plates deep underground" and one of my crew responded with "surpassed only by the clashing together of my *** cheeks deep in my undershorts" , which definitely lightened the mood.

Ok, so the east coast had a shaker, makes sense it scares the brown out of some of the people, Being a west coaster that has been in several quakes, you do not get used to the huge earth shaking experience.

I would love to interview the couple in the trailer park who just happend to be doing the horizontal mambo at the time of the quake. I am sure he would be asking her if the ground moved for her during that particular round...Or do you think her screaming and jumping was a result of finding the elusive "G" spot? And if there was conception during the event, what would you name the offspring?

Natural disasters occur everywhere, floods, tornados, hurricanes and earthquakes are all geographically located for their general areas... I do not have to worry about floods or tornados, etc, where in the US and Canada is there a safe place to be? I want to move there...

FWFE

We felt it all the way in southeastern NC. I've been battling an ear infection for several days that caused dizziness. At first I thought... "Crap! My ear is getting worse!" Then I realized it wasn't just me shaking.

:(

I think we have Tsunami and Plague remaining on the list. We're about to scratch off Hurricane this weekend. Enough already!!!

You could move here. We haven't had a volcano since Crater Lake was formed. :D That's about when Beemerdons was a kid :p

5.8 pfttt ! that's the same as Old Michael passing some gas...no big deal ! :D

Think about our Loma Prieta quake at 7.9,( some say 8.1 ) which equals a shaker 100 more times as powerfull as a 5.8 on the logarithmic scale of amplitude. A day I'll never ever forget, as I was less than a mile from the epicenter. October 17th 1989.

Yep, hang this on OM. Word is he was seen at Chipotle ordering a burrito with the extra hot salsa so it musta been him.

They said that it was felt in Toronto, north of Buffalo....I live west of Toronto, closer to Niagara Falls & Buffalo & my pool never shook....I feel so left out :cray: ......

There's always dynamite!

Maybe your neighbors will enjoy the experience, too?

:D

Seriously, folks, we're used to them but it's still a gut-wrenching experience. It's hard for those of us who can shake it off by saying, "Hmmmm...that was an earthquake!" to imagine what it would be like for you who've not had one since just after WWII....long before most of you were born (except maybe beemerdon, but he's in the Southwest).

Thankfully the epicenter wasn't in a population dense area and damage appears to be minimal.

Scary stuff, huh!?!? SOmething completely beyond your control and comes with no "off" switch..... :dribble:

Well, hell, I went home early yesterday for a parent-teacher conference for our kindergartener. After that I was cutting the grass and didn't feel a thing. My wife was at the grocery store and called and said stuff was flying off the shelves. I asked our 5 year old who was playing in the back yard with our 3 year old and she said the ground got "all wiggley and the swings were moving". DC was a mess with folks leaving early.

I went in today and was at the garage at 0530 and all was well. Then the message comes out at 0700 that they need to inspect the buildings and the HQ is closed. Hmmmm....ya think they would have known that last night? So I'm now working from home. In any case, it was a beautiful day to ride.
