Eating cheap on the road

You may want to check local fire conditions as there are more than a few fires in the Trinity Alps area pumping mega smoke in that area, may be best riding along the coast.
You're right about that. I'm keeping close watch on the fires but we don't depart until Sept 3. Hopefully the fires will be contained and smoke will have abated. If not... the trip will be made up last minute and we'll call it an Adventure. Hopefully not the kind that Neil Peart referred to in one of his books: "Adventures suck while you're having them".

Ahh, Subway. That's our usual go-to place when we're on day rides and granola bars won't cut it.

SWMBO: She Who Must Be Obeyed.

In my case, SWMBO is the one who declared this a "budget meal" trip so I'm okay not trying to impress her with food. After 28 years of her in my rear view mirror we "understand" each other.

I'm blessed to have a wife who loves to ride (she has an '06 BMW K1200S).

Please translate SYMBO.
I may have to alter my previous post.
It is SWMBO. She Who Must Be Obeyed.
And you know this how, Jer?

I try to average $200.00 or less for food ,fuel and lodging for two people. If I'm traveling solo it gets a lot cheaper because my standards are lower but I want it nicer for my bride.

You Romantic Old Devil.....

Cashews and Welches fruit chews in the tank bag- one stop at a Subway will get me through 10 days (With Vitamins) - usually 3 Motels and 7 Iron Butt Motels.

Its not desired comfort, but the method allows me cheap days of riding…

With 2 up… forget about cheap - no cost is too great for sharing the ride.

Highways 3 and 36 are both closed right now due to fires. Inciweb is the place to check for updates. If you can get to it, and like remote, Forest Service 1 from Mad River to Hwy 299 is a fun road. Both times I've ridden it I haven't seen another human along the entire length. I'll be with a group of riders riding that area and up to Crater Lake and the Oregon Coast that weekend, starting from Red Bluff. Hopefully the roads will be open by then. Forks of Salmon is nice and goaty but turns epic when you get to Cecilville.

As for meals, personally I try to eat light. Most hotel/motel "breakfasts" are carbs only unfortunately. I would rather patronize a local (non-corporate/chain) establishment. If they have home-made apple or peach pie, then that's my bonus. I don't do fast-food. If I'm hungry while riding I always have Kind bars and some fruit, and a Hydroflask with water that I can dump Starbucks instant juices into. With a microwave available, I'd be apt to pick up some breakfast burritos at a grocery store along with, say, some pre-cut melon packages you can get for breakfast and include the usual in-room coffee. Snacks, as I mentioned, for on the road during the day, then find a local place to support for dinner. But, hey that's just me.

Sandwiches in ziploc bags are great, but I make something a little more durable.

Same ingredients as the sandwich you prefer, but instead of bread, I use a soft tortilla. Wrap them up tight, stick them in the ziploc, and when you pack them, you can pack them real tight without smashing the bread flat. A little easier to eat, too, like at a wayside rest. I've made wraps like that for motorcycling and fishing.

Many great suggestions here. This place is amazing.

SWMBO for me translates as "Wouldn't Be Without It".

I am blessed with a very satisfactory wife unit, in spite of the need for "O"ing it.

Spousal Unit has her own bikes. Our deal is that I carry the tent and Jet Boil; she carries the provisions and related gear.... even a table cloth. Women do bring a bit of civilization to what otherwise would be a rather sorted affair.

Well, as I'm a noob on this forum, I just have to say... You are all a bunch of...

Oh wait, that's Facebook.

I'm glad that I finally have a motorcycle that's popular enough to have such an active forum.

There IS such a thing as a stupid question (just ask my mom). But... Y'all have the answers!!

As a way of background, I met my SWMBO 28 years ago. She told a mutual friend that she wanted a mc ride. That turned into her getting a Virago (to chase me on my 85 Venture Royale. Met in May, married in September. We are DINKs. We identify ourselves as motorcyclists. She currently is the master pilot of a BMW K1200S with several track days under her belt.

Yup, I lucked out.

You're making that up.
