I was pokeing around craigslist tonight ad saw this ad:

FJR For Sale

Notice where he says the milage is off due to ECU recal/reset. I have never heard of this before. Has anyone else?

TIA!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The mileage is held in the IP, IINM and not the ECU. If you replace the IP - which was the case on some '06's, then yes, the mileage shown is not the actual mileage.

Dang TWN, a whole of them der acronyms going on..

Let me try to translate.

My early 06 had a faulty instantaneous mpg read out. Yamaha warranted and repaired by replacing the entire instrument cluster. The new instrument cluster read 0 miles, so I now had a brand new bike.

Then, many miles later, I hit a deer. The entire front end vaporized, and I got a new instrument cluster. So once again, my mileage reset to zero.

Effectively, my 60k 2006 reads ~12,000 miles. I would never hide the mileage from a potential buyer, but some could, and some do, and some have.

BTW 10k is too much $$.

Don't see anything about the ECU

What is stated is what DCarver and TWN refer to. It may have had the ECU replaced due to altitude surge.

The mileage is only stored in the instrument panel, not the ECU (computer). Dcarver's correct about why the instrument panels were changed. As part of the recall instructions, the dealers that changed the instrument panels were to affix an actual mileage sticker on the inside lid of the glove box and a second sticker on the last page of the owners manual. It is worth having a look in both these places for the sticker. In this Forum, many have said that they will remove the sticker from the glove box for a variety of reasons. BUT -- none were an attempt to deceive.

The seller is a bit confused about what the dealer did to the instrument panel, it can not be reprogrammed, it has to be physically replaced with a new unit to fix the instantaneous mpg read out problem.

Thanks for all the quick responses. And thanks for clearing that up for me. At least he is not trying to hide anything.

I thought 10K was too much as well, what would be a good price in your opinion?

Just as a point of reference, Kelly Blue Book says that the trade in value of a good condition '06 FJR is $7k and retail is $10k. IMO, the add-ons are worth ~ $350 tops. Confirm that it is not an AE (auto clutch) and verify the actual miles. Mileage on FJRs is almost a non issue except for maintenance purposes. If the bike is in the area of 26K miles you will be looking at a valve check or adjustment which could range up to $600 if an adjustment is needed. Use this as a bargaining lever. Check to see if it has Yamaha's Extended Service plan (YES).

A good deal for you will be someplace between $7K and $9k, only you know what your financial situation can take.

Hope it works out for you!

You can get a new '08 for a little over $12K. If I could get the '06 for around $7K I might purchase that, otherwise I'd buy a new "07 [if I could find one] or an '08.

I just purchased a new '08 about a week ago, so I'm by no means an expert at this, but the prices on the couple of used FJR's I found in the LA CA area were too close to the new price.

Good luck in your search

It's sold... Not to me though. I got an email from the owner this morning that he had sold it.

No worries, looks like I found what I am looking for and will be picking it up in a week or two!!!

Thanks for all the help guys!!

My local dealer here in Salt Lake has a brand new 07'A (black cherry) on the floor, probably could get it for a good price.

South Valley Yamaha, 801-576-1899

Matt Smiltcheck is one of their dealers that has given me some great deals, and no ********.

Let me know if I can help.

I had the ECU replaced on my 07 per the recall notice. It DID NOT affect the odometer.
