Edit: Remove the tensioner before starting the engine?

When I removed the cover over the ignition pickup, the pin that locates the bottom of the rear cam chain guide came out with the cover letting the rear guide drop down. I was able to get the guide back in place and the pin back where it goes but wonder if the tensioner took up the slack when the guide fell and if I need to remove the tensioner and reset it or anything. before starting the engine.

 
Yes.  If you pulled the timing cover and the chain guide pin came out, and so you lost chain tension, there is a pretty good chance the chain jumped a tooth on the crank.  You do need to verify timing.  It is unlikely to cause the valves to crash, but possible, and that is catastrophic.  The more likely scenario is the new mistiming will cause the engine to run poorly.  Sorry, but better safe than sorry.
