The final cost was $1044.38. What was found was the rear shock was bad again second one in 54K. And the radiator cap was bad (replaced warranty) a full tune with valve check 8.5 hours $825. Change fork oil 1.5hrs $112 new battery $105.
If you are saying that both the shock and thermostat were covered by warranty, then you got a good deal on your warranty and you got screwed on the valve adjustment. If, on the other hand, you mean that the thermostat was covered but the cost of the shock was included in the $825 then your cost was reasonable because the price of a rear shock alone from Yamaha is around $650.

Anyway, glad you are back on the road and enjoying the riding.

I checked my valves a few days ago at 26k miles. The exhausts were all in spec (7-10 thou). The intakes were consistently low, cyl. 1 to 4 being: 6,4 3,3 3,3 5,5 (thousands). The factory shop manual says ~6 to 9 thou. The intake shims were: 6@ 1.85mm and 2@ 1.83mm. Great manufacturing tolerances. Went to the Red Bluff Yamaha dealer and the sevice manager/head mechanic said if he was doing it he wouldn't change any shims. I mentioned the figures in the manual and he said he'd been to all the Yamaha update mechanic classes and they were always told to set Yamaha intakes a 4 to 7 thou., been a mechanic for 15 yrs, and is an intelligent guy (my opinion).

He ask if I had half thou guages, I said no. He thought the 3 thou readings were probably just under 4, hence he wouldn't change them. Went with his advice but bumped the four valves a 3 thous up to 4 thou.

They charge 4 hours ($60 per) to check the valves. Took me a lot longer than that, but I took my time.

Any comments?

Jestal mentioned in another thread to check the valve lash at a couple different points on the round part of the cam lobe when in doubt, to see if the cam's manufacturing runount was affecting the accuracy of the lash measurement.

This makes sense to me.

Current estimate for Valve Adjustment at your "friendly" neighborhood Dealer in Dickson TN; $592

Same regardless of whether they adj. or just check. Each shim used would be an additional $16. TBS would be another $148. I have an appointment to take the Bike to Cool Springs Yamaha where they said $161 will cover the check and 175 more will cover any adjustments including shims. Plus $70 for TBS. WOW! What a difference! Do these service managers not know about Forums such as this one? I guess they have enough business and don't need mine! Nor my Patronage to their Accessories department.

Wait....Yamaha won't cover the rear shock or thermostat under their extended unlimited mileage warranty? I sure wouldn't consider either one of these items a so called wear item. What gives?

If you ask me, $161/$175 sounds pretty low. In fact, I would suspect they don't even do it, and charge you anyways. It obviously varies by dealer hourly rate, but it seems most Valve checks are running close to $500 or more. Remember, it's not just the hourly rate. Gaskets must be replaced. Most will change spark plugs and coolant since they are removed anyways. Then there is the cost for shims. For my recent valve adjustment, the parts total alone was $145. For the valvle adjustment, it was 5.0 hours X $78/hr shop rate = $390.

Both MAY be covered, but you better have
very little time/miles on the rear shock. For the most part, is an item that will fail with normal wear & tear. As mentioned above, that's why so many of us buy rebuildable (stock shock isn't) custom shocks.

As for the thermostat, I don't know. I think a lot will be whether the dealer goes to bat for you. I had to replace my thermostat, and the dealer didn't even try. So I ended up paying for it. But for the most part, there have been very little failures of the thermostat.

Got my rear shock replaced under YES at 16,000miles. Went out one morning and found it had leaked oil all over the floor, maybe that's why they covered it. Ian, Iowa
