Going stir crazy in the snow here. I gotta plan/dream about some daytrips or something...

(BTW, I'm not a trip organizer or trip leader at EOM...I just love looking at the twisty roads on the WV/VA maps)

Here are two routes for review that use RT 16 :yahoo: ...they're both on the longer side

These are just "amateur" routes. I'm sure spklbuk will have the routes with all the really good roads on 'em.

Route 1 - 374 miles

(starting out on the BRP, coming north on Rt16, then shoot back to Lewisburg "all-you-can-eat" all-day ride)

Route 2 - 313 miles

(starting out west then cruising Rt 16 twice before shooting back to Lewisburg)

I'll think up some more later for west and north of Lewisburg...

You doing pretty good on your own. But those stretches of 460 from Rich Creek to Tazwell or Rich Creek to Blacksburg are beeatchs. If it make you feel any better, I took a ride for you over into VA today :p

Mark, there are good roads to the north, too. But 16??? 16 is the ****!

Wheaton,

You sure you weren't drinking when you drew that green line :alcoholic: it looks like you had a bad case of the shakes :p .

You are right about that. I've ridden 16 several times. There's a section north of I81 just past Hungry Mother State Park that's nothing but 15-20 mph switchbacks for about 5 miles.

I wasn't sure whether the BRP was a good road for a group ride due to it's low speed limit...but thought some might like that. I also presume that 219 south of Lewisburg is probably boring but is a good route to "get out of Dodge" or get back home.

I will look at roads north and west next as I like rt 60 and the hawks nest and kanawha falls areas and would probably like to explore rt 16 north of 60 as I haven't travelled that area. I obviously enjoyed the area north of Lewisburg last year at the STN national and WV Ramble.

In my mind...you can't go wrong in any part of WV it seems.

Mark, The first route is probably a little ambitious. We only did about 250 miles each day at the WV ramble if memory serves. That was 9:00am to 7:00pm, and as you know we didn't stop and screw around too much. But then again, if you're only out this way once a year..go for it.

Ask Zorkler how many miles he did on the last day, that may help with planning. I faintly remember looking at the clock in bed as he rumbled in around 11:00pm. Now that's riding!

I'm looking forward to riding this part of WV!!

Yeah, I kinda figured Route 1 was...but hey! It was fun to think about tryin' though. :) The way that group rides go sometimes, we probably wouldn't be gettin to rt 16 until dinner time :) ...even though S&T says that we should be done about dinner time, with 15 minute breaks every 2 hours.

As your Rambles have shown...anything about 250 miles or so gives you a chance to stop and talk, not be rushed, and still get back to the motel without being too tired and still have plenty of twisties to talk about.

Anything longer than 300 miles of curvy roads would definitely be less chatty, and you would definitely be whipped by the end of the day. But hey, sometimes tired is good...if it's preceeded by 300+ miles of twisties. :yahoo: :clapping:

I would prefer to stay out of Virginia as much as possible because of their law prohibiting radar detectors.

Yeah Jim, you got that right. I say make routes with Virginia in it if you feel so inclined. People don't have to ride it if they don't want to, right? I understand the "no tolerance" policy for radar detectors. You might consider that you'd be hard pressed in some areas to BREAK the limit as it is. & besides, how fast do you folks really need to go? Hahaha!! Maybe I shouldn't ask that.

But seriously, you'll be on day rides. 10 MPH over the limit appears to be a "no ticket" zone in VA. I often do more than that... but you might be pushing your luck. I've lived in VA for over 25 years & have had very few (3) speeding tickets. If you use good judgement there shouldn't be a problem.

Just my $.02 and I'm not at all trying to influence things, but riding 2 up, 250 miles is a more realistic pace. Sprinkle that with some scenic stuff and it's a good day for my passenger. When I attended meetings like this in the past someitmes the day rides were 400 mile twisty marathons, and I pick those when riding alone, but not two up. Maybe 2 available routes each day would be good. One around 250 or so and another longer for the hardcore folks.

Also, BRP is great riding and I have not found it to be slow, neither did the Ranger that gave me the ticket. LOL You can criuse at 50 MPH which is only 5 over the posted and just don't slow down for the corners to get your giggles.

Just some thoughts.

Bob

Yeah Bob,

I agree...2-up. 250 miles is a long enough day. I'm sure there were will be shorter rides and longer rides put out there by spklbuk or whomever is doing rides. There are all types of folks who attend these things.

Case in point...ejworthen (who bought an FJR recently) and his wife rode a 400 mile twisty day at the STN National last June from Canaan Valley Resort in WV. He and his wife were riding a Strom IIRC.

I think I will try to bite off one of the longer rides presented (or ride one of my own) , as others choose a different route.

I just get antsy when snow is on the ground for those fun trips ... so I daydreamed on my MS S & T. Which is all these routes are. They might be a basis for one or two of my rides at EOM.

Hi guys & gals! Referring to the "miles" length of routes: I think that the best way to handle this is to have routes back to the hotel part way thru the longer rides for those that want to bail. I'm gonna' talk to Jim about having "bail routes" for anyone that doesn't feel up to doing the whole thing. For those that attended the ST.net national last year, kinda' like that route planning was handled.

I myself would be inclined to do a longer ride early in the meet & the shorter ones later into the weekend. I know from past experience I'll get worn out the further we go into the weekend doing long mile days everday. I guess that is the price that I pay for getting older. Gotta' look at the bright side... the alternate really suck... & at least I'm ridin'!!!

I have a few more routes attached in this post...still plenty curvy if you look at a Gazetteer or GPS.

These routes are north of Lewisburg generally. You will notice on the longer routes that have loops in them so people can bail back towards Lewisburg if they're really looking for a shorter route. I won't post anymore routes and suck up any more bandwidth...but I think you can see that there are some good roads and routes to take once you get here.

As with the 1st two routes...comments are welcome. If anyone is familiar with these sections of roads and know that they are in crappy condition or have high traffic volume, let me know and I will try to adjust the routes if you let me know a better alternative.

YAHOO!! WV Here I come...

Route 3 - 250 miles

Route 4 - 250 miles

Route 5 - 375 miles

Route 6 - 360 miles

Holy cow! You are in need of getting out on that bike!

The routes are great! Route 3 and route 6 both have the same section of hwy 19 . That peice is 4 lane with Summerville being a easy spot to get a ticket if you don't keep to the posted speed.

That small section is the only setion I see that is bad.

Thanks Tom. Just the input I was looking for...

I will see if I can't find a state or county road north that parallels US19 in this area. I think there is. I was just hoping to get up north in that section to come back south on a seemingly really curvy section of rt 16.
