You got that part about Summersville right. When I was there for the fall colors ride we stayed in Summersville. Jim warned us over and over about speeding even in the smallest amounts in Summersville. It seems they generate much of their revenue thru traffic stops. There is a billboard in town about it. I forgot what it said. Maybe Jim can tell you. Pretty funny...

I'm going to be honest here (BIG surprise right?), even with my daughter on the back, I have no desire to ride through VA if avoidable. The RD also serves as a proximity alert and has saved me many times from passing a slow cager on double-yellows, right in front of The Man. I truly hate to ride without it.

Those are some awesome routes. Route #2 gets my vote for the reasons stated above, less VA miles, no Summersville, more practical distance. At EOM-06, 250 miles seemed to be the magic number. It slowed the pace enough to make Iris antzy and yet was quick enough to push Grumpy to get his gear on. It just takes more time to move a group as a group. Plus it teaches me patience for which I need constant remedial instruction.

Keep up the good work. Mapping routes is not easy. LuvToRide and I are planning some weekend visits to test some segments and build routes.

Surprise Jeff! Summersville is fairly deep into WV... not VA

And as I've said before. If you don't want to ride in VA then you don't need to. The vast majority of us (even non-VA people) don't have RD because they don't feel it necessary.

Maybe try something like.... keeping your eyes open?

Everyone,

There a plenty of roads that will permit riding in WV only, but there are many desirable rides in VA as well. One of the reasons L'burg was proposed had to do access to both states. IMHO, the concern over no radar detectors in VA is being overblown. I've ridden in VA for several years w/o incident, sometimes pushin' limits considerably*, but always exercising good judgement about when and where to apply right wrist. YMMV. *closed course of course.

As Huron said, should you find yourself on the Rt 19 4 lane section thru Summersville, WV that you slow down to 5 miles below speed limt 5 miles on either side of and thru the municipality (yes, there are signs to let you know). That's a total of 12-13 miles, not gonna make or break your ride. The town is a good place to stop for food and fuel on many of the WV rides.

Wheaton,

Bad news, the section of Rt 16 from say Sutton south thru Clay and on to Gauley Bridge while a decent ride, follows a river valley with lots of sweepers but is not exactly twisty. But you're still not doing to bad on your route planning.

Much info on route planning will be forthcoming.

I've done 95% of my 20k miles in VA and it's a great state to ride in with some truly great roads, and people, and wine. If you feel you can't ride in a state where you can't use a RD, then we don't want ya!!!!

Another 2 or 3 cents worth.

If you ride into Va try and include rt #311 down through Paint Black and rt #58 over to Damascus. You can head up north from Damascus on rt #92 which leads you through some interesting areas including a short ride on gravel road, but worth it. Also my favorat is rt #250 through Montery. Nice curves and great seenry In WV everyone should take a side trip over to New River gorge. It is worth the trip and not far.

I feel so.... Unwanted!

LOL you guys are so funny... I don't have a RD mainly because I can't have one where I live Ontario Canada so as Heidi says.... I use my other 7 senses to help me from getting a ticket.

But just like loud pipes saves lives... .....so does speed kills... Because you are not on track, your playing out in the public.

But before anyone gets bend out of shape.... I do ride over the speed limit when I want to. :p

But then I have been told if I am not riding over the limit in twistys all the time I am not riding a motorcycle.

Tom,

We rode together at the WV Ramble last year.

You and I ride about the same pace...you speed demon!

Some of us Eastern folks seem to be a bit textually challenged...

I SAID, that given a choice I'd rather not ride in Virginia. I thought that was what the whole damn thread was about, choosing and offering OPINIONS on the two routes. I have an opinion just like everyone else, and my opinion smells like... too!

:)

I love you guys!!! Just continue ignoring me like always. I'll be busy on the side of the road mounting/dismounting my RD!

:)

Jeff
