Some folks (that's what we call them in the South) are dying to know which route(s) are likely to be "the most fun".

I thought it might be fun to post a poll and let ya'll decide.

EOM Routes

ok, I'll bite.

Nice try, Jeff, but option 8 is not going to happen. And there is no, "How am I going to ride all these roads in 3 days" option...

See everyone in 10 days...

Wow, only 10 days to go. I've been so busy at work that I have not had time to even look at the routes yet. I did load them on the GPS, and found the battery is dead on my FJR (even with a battery tender on it). Ordered a new battery but don't have it yet. Man, where did the summer go???? Well, in Ohio, it never got here. I guess I better start packing.

I thinks I will leave the dragon alone for another day. All other routes are up for grab. No favorites as of yet. Any day on two wheels is a good thing.

Thanks for the routes jeff. Now i just need to learn how to make them. I just got my Zumo last week.

If the voters had the remotest of ideas what riding 281 followed in a few miles by 28 would be like, it'd easily be the winner.......but I'm not going to tell them.

I like the notes on this route, "CAUTION - DANGEROUS TWISTIES"

Do you think this route is good for the tires?

I have a feeling my poor new storms will be shot by the time I get home!

The big yellow sign warning of hairpins on gravel always kept me off 281........

now that it's paved, it's a must do for me.

But no way I want to ride through Smoky Mt NP and the congestion to the north.

(But if you've never been there, you should go thru the Park at least once!)

So I will ride an altered rt that includes 281 and also 151 (Devil's Drop) which is another one I never did.

I'll be In Johnson City Tuesday so, if the weather cooperates, I'll be doing a couple extra days.

Since I've never done the Devil's Triangle either, I may do super slab to get there and

do a counterclockwise loop of the Triangle then slab back or maybe proceed thru the Dragon

and Hell Bender and then do the expressway and slab back to JC.

(I've already done Wayah Rd four times this year, so I can skip that.)

I also have an alternate rt around the southeast of JC that takes parts of the EOM rt's and adds 226A

(to Little Switzerland) and a little loop around Beech Mt (194) off of 321 but avoids the northern parts around the Snake.

(I have no idea how to post GPS rt links but I could email a Garmin file if anyone was interested.)

I've been contemplating one more route that's geared for those of use who have already done all the "must-do" places in the vicinity a few hundred times each. I'd like to focus more to the west and possibly include Devil's Triangle.

Can you confirm that CCW is the only decent direction remaining? The last info I could find was from late 2008. I have not seen any reports to indicate if perhaps road maintenance has been done, or if the road conditions for a CW run remain pretty bad.

Also, if you want to email those GPX files to me, I'll use them for a starting tool kit on a new route or two.

No. But I will try to contact someone that just rode it last month and try to find out.

Done.

Whoever worked on the routes deserves a big thumbs up. I ride a lot in WNC; Not that much NW of Johnson City though. Spending every weekend up there in the summer I could add some hidden gems, but nonetheless, good job route-master...and Route # 2 IS the route for the best twisties. I hope to join up for a few days of riding during the EOM.

Outstanding work on the routes Mr. Ashe!

Wow! You guys are gonna have a blast!

Although I can't make this EOM due to $$/vacation time issues, I will save these and maybe use these routes as a base for a weeks vacation in western North Carolina next summer.

Grumpy, are you leading #4 on Saturday?
No, my dear. I ride that all the time. I'll likely be doing the North like Daniel Boone.....an area I've never ridden. I'll be 2 up for all of EOM and besides I'm still trying to mentally recover from the crash.

In regard to EOM-5; I did KY 119 over Pine Mt. and KY/VA 160 over Black Mt. last weekend. Way Fun but a lot of gravel on the VA side of 160. Beware!

I heard that N C pavement compound is purposely rougher in order to maintain better adhesion to the Road. Have NOT checked this little tidbit for accuracy. I've personally never noticed more wear from my tires when riding N C.

I think when it's new most NC asphalt is about like new anywhere else.....smooth and black. However, when it wears a bit it uncovers the gravel, which in the western part of the state is mostly crushed granite which does wear on tires. Haulin can talk with authority about down east roads, but my impression is that they mostly use chip seal which leaves the aggregate standing proud, as the English say. Hard on tires and noisy as a b..tch, but offers excellent traction.
