Three types of routes are being planned: main paved road routes, adventure routes and dual sport routes. The .gpx files will be up on the upcoming registration website. Below are the rally pak descriptions of adventure and dual sport loops.
The all bitumen adventure loops are runnable on any machine but are likely to be most fun on a lighter machine. They provide a good sampling of WV backways; what Reverend Haulin’ Ashe refers to as “the real WV.” Road berms are often high and most locals assume they have the right of way when meeting a motorcycle. Have fun but exercise due caution.
Denmar Lobelia Adventure Loop
This 110 mile loop is a mix of one and a half and one lane paved roads that include some tight mountain twisties and switchbacks. A most interesting POI is the boardwalk through unique rock formations at Bear Town State Park. Another highlight is passing by the ubercool razor wire at Denmar Correction Facility so that you are reminded to behave yourself! The scenic portion of the tour is from Frankford to White Sulphur Springs through Blue Bend Recreation Area near Anthony, WV.
Pluto Sandstone Mountain Adventure Loop
A 120 mile loop circles the upper New River Gorge through neighboring Summers County and back along the wild and scenic Greenbrier River on the way home. LOTS of elevation changes with this one. A brief 5 mile out and back side trip on Pluto Road will feed your twisty habit, just be careful to not over gun your game. A second out and back to Sandstone Falls in the New River National River is by itself worth the ride. Be sure to take the boardwalk tour, it is well worth your time. Elk Mountain to Judson to Clayton will make you wonder if the elk and buffalo were drunk when they made the original paths. And then a brief stint along the bucolic Greenbrier will relax you as you close.
Paint Bank Humpback Bridge Adventure Loop
Friendly for adventurous 2-up riders this 160 mile ride will take you into the Ridge and Valley Province of western Virginia. Twist up and over Kate’s Mountain in Greenbrier State Forest, pass by an idyllic Moncove Lake, take a short hike to the Hanging Rock Migratory Bird Observation Tower (it levels off just up there a little piece J ) and stop to see the baby buffaloes all before you get to Paint Bank. The Paint Bank General Store and the Swinging Bridge Restaurant are always worth a stop. After running the twisty delight over Potts Mountain on VA 311, you will become immersed in the off the charts scenery of the **** and Johns Creek Valley then make your way north to Rich Patch Mountain and cut through Hayes Gap to the outskirts of Covington, VA. The Midland Trail, US60W, leads you past Virginia’s Humpback wooden bridge roadside park and then you will make your way home along State Line Road into White Sulphur Springs, WV.
The dual sport loops are a mix of pavement, gravel and dirt roads. Surfaces will vary accordingly and high ground clearance is required. They are not suitable for a highway bike.
Mountain Lake Tub Run Dual Sport Loop 175 miles
Stellar! Saddle sore. Nuf said.
Slab Camp Peach Orchard Dual Sport Loop 80 miles
The pavement crew thinks they have twisties. Pffttt! Overcook a turn on this loop and they will find your bones as the buzzards are picking them clean! Beginning in the Greenbrier State Forest, the route takes you along the scenic forest habitat of Kate’s Mountain and offers highland view of the world famous Greenbrier Hotel in White Sulphur Springs. It then winds along the southern boundary of the Monongahela National Forest. You will discover a wild cliff overlooking the Wild and Scenic Greenbrier River at Cape Reed. Please be careful at the overlook, there is nothing between you and falling over but air.
Briery Knob Dual Sport Loop 150 miles
Climb from the Greenbrier Valley to the top of Greenbrier County. It takes a little pavement to get into this high country Allegheny Front loop but once you’re there…hang on...it’s up, up and away! Atop Brier Knob you will find yourself at the ceiling of Greenbrier County as you pass through Red Spruce Forest that occurs only as fragmented habitat islands in the Allegheny Mountains and are home to many species characteristic of more northerly climes. You will ride among the windmills of the Beech Knob Wind Farm. Rumor has this route also traverses a certain marine’s favorite rock garden.
