I personally haven't done the $59.95 tune-up (Escort 8500 non x50), but over at radardetector.net they have some great info over there. Matter of fact, an Official Escort spokesperson frequents that site. I have seen several threads regarding the tune-up, but I cant remember what the final verdict is on if it was worth it or not.... I'm thinking it was...

Just got a 9500ix from Radar Roy with 10% off (about $50) - still pretty expensive, but was highly rated everywhere I could find.

Also just bought the Visual Alert from Marc Parnes. I'm currently milling it down (on my Sherline) to make it easier to mount UNDER my dash shelf with dual-sided UHB foam tape. Going to drill holes to matchup with the LEDs in the lip of the dash shelf so they shine through, but the whole thing remains invisible otherwise.

Still looking for a better way of mounting the detector itself to the shelf - using Extreme Velcro right now. I want to be able to attach and disconnect it quickly for storage when parked, so maybe velcor is the best option. Rare earth magents are another option, but not sure if magnets would interfere with the electronics.

Still looking for a better way of mounting the detector itself to the shelf - using Extreme Velcro right now. I want to be able to attach and disconnect it quickly for storage when parked, so maybe velcor is the best option. Rare earth magents are another option, but not sure if magnets would interfere with the electronics.

They won't.

In fact you can buy a magnetic mounting plate set-up from RAM called a "Power Plate" that gives you a metal plate to stick to the bottom of the RD and then "Power Plate" to mount wherever you want it. The two circular magnets are very powerful and hold the RD quite securely.

I have mine on a RAM stem over the brake reservoir, but I see no reason you couldn't screw it to a dash shelf.

I have my V1 on a NLine dash shelf on that exact ram mount. Dead center where I can see it. It and the Garmin come off in seconds.

I got a Fuzzbuster (oversized sardine can with big eye red lens) in box in the basement. Will tha do?? Rattles a bit inside. I actually ran this on the dash of a Windjammer on a GT 750 Suzuki in the 70's ( see rattles inside above) . They might get a kick out of that one. Cliff

I bought the same thing and that deal is still available on eBay.

These are refurbs direct from Escort, the manufacturer. The 8500 (non X50) is $150 shipped and the X50 is $200. Both come with a 6 month factory warranty.

If it's that old, it is most likely an X band only RD. So it will let you know where all the door openers are but probably not the cops. I hear there are some parts of the country that cops still use X-band (New Jersey?), but around here, none of the cops use it anymore, so I have it turned off on my Passport. The Townies use mostly K (some Ka) and the Staties use Ka exclusively.

My laser signal goes off when the sun is shining from behind me and reflecting off the windscreen. My horn is so loud I don't know if the radar detector is going off or not. :lol:

Mine does that. I think it is related to a temporary voltage drop caused by the horn drawing so much power.

I had read somewhere on the Net that it being dirty as sets it off when you blow the horn. Mine does it no matter what vechile it's in. Oh well, they can fix it hopefully as I called this afternoon and set things up. Time will tell.

Well, if being dirty sets it off like that then that would certainly fit for me. My Escort stays on the bike all year under a plexiglass cover that just barely keeps the rain off. It is plenty dusty and it has been wet a few times. If they fix yours I'll be tempted to send mine in.
