Just an FYI. I recently traded in my old (2005) Escort 8500X50 for a new one (same model) and bought the Smart Cord for the Escort Live function while in the cage. One thing I noticed is that the volume of the unit is not near as loud as my old unit. I modified the internal settings to loud and made sure the thumb wheel volume control was dialed up to full volume. I tried it out on my trip to Ray's RTE and found I missed a couple of alerts via my Autocom system as I had the windscreen full down ( it was HOT!) and was running music. I'd never had that problem with the older model so I contacted Escort Technical Assistance who admitted that the new models do not have the volume of the old ones. I'm still fiddling with my set up and may send it back and have my old one repaired. Just food for thought, if someone needs the upper end of the audio volume to work for them as the new ones don't equal the older models.

I spent the entire weekend trying to keep Exskibum in my sights! Next time we'll give it a try.

That's interesting. I just got an 8500x50 and it blows out my ears through the Starcom. I just click the wheel to on and don't turn up the volume. I did buy it refurbished so it might be an older one?

I've got an 8500X50 with a bad extral speaker. Not had any issues with the audio jack, use it wired through a starcom.

Just upgraded to the 9500 and like Oface says, unless I keep the volume all the way down it blows my eardrums out.

John, I had a thought you might not have the Escort on a prioritized input on the Autocom, or it may be getting muted by another device. Where is it hooked in and what is on the other inputs?

I've got my 9500ix wired into a Sena SR10 and bluetoothed to a Sena SMH10. I have the Escort turned all the way down and is still too loud. :blink: Looking for a fix now.

If you mean the Valentine 1, I would have to agree, this detector is by far the best one money can buy, saved me and my son a ton of times :devil: from Black 'n White.

Yep, I just bought a new x50 and I'm sending it back for the second time to get the external jack fixed. I have also noticed that the customer service sucks too. They seem to think it's my fault that the jack went out.

I've not had any issues with their customer service. My issue is with my radar detector's audio output crapping out a few hours into a long, several thousand mile trip. Twice! This past time they were very apologetic and said it was very unusual to to have repeated issues. Yeah, whatever. They also again asked me if I am using a mono cord as a stereo cord can cause issues. Well, I am using a mono cord. Once I specifically bought for this new X50 as my old one worked fine with a stereo cord.

Because mine was out for repair, I used GSJane's 9500 on my last 2,000 mile ride with no issues. Mine's back, but I haven't had a chance to use it again yet. It better not go out again.

Be sure to pay attention to impedance matching if connecting X50 audio output to other device(s) for signal manipulation, e.g. autocomm, starcomm, etc. The audio driver on the x50 is not, umm, 'robust' and a low impedance input further up circuit will cause problems with the source (x50) amp when it tries to supply too much current then freaks out and dies a slow horrible death.

 

On KrZy8, the audio output feeds a Mark Parnes visual alert and Starcomm audio. The Starcomm requires a special (ahem) impedance matching patch cord for which they charge too much money.

 

I've been too lazy to simply build the 'impedance matcher' as a stand-alone box (z matcher) thus enabling a straight mono audio cord and eliminating the need for the (too) costly Starcomm cord.

The Mixit2 was specifically designed to use with the X50 and Garmin GPS, they had issues running them together.
