Much has been in the news and publications on the ethanol in our fuel supplies. I'm curious if any of you with the Genl and perhaps earlier Genll bikes have had any negative mechanical problems with ethanol in the gas? I suppose the Yamaha engineers have made some adjustments on components to deal with the effects of ethanol.

Yamaha Australia, on their website, say no ethanol what so ever.

Also listed on the Gen 2 owners manual, no ethanol.

My gen 3 owners manual say it's OK to use up to E10.

I've had to use it before to get by, but normally filled my Gen2's only enough to get to the next service station.

No problems with mine as long as I don't leave the fuel in the tank more than a couple of months. When storing the bike for the season I fill with corn free fuel and run it to clear out the ethanol.

No problems so far but I do fill up with non-ethanol fuel about once a month and make sure that I fill up with non-ethanol fuel when I anticipate not riding for several weeks during the winter.

 
Over a 100k running nothing but ethanol regular. Lots of things to worry about in the world but ethanol fuel in the FJR isn't one of them.

To the best of my knowledge, I have never used alcohol-free gas

in my Gen II. By law it's not available in my state and I don't seek

it out when I travel.

For the last ten years I've stored my bike all winter with a full tank

of ethanol-laced fuel treated with Stabil.

I then run some Startron through with the first tank in the spring.

So far, I haven't experienced any problems or issues.

 
May be that I am just putting my head in the sand on this issue but I never worry about it. Most of the time when I am riding I have many other things that take priority over seeking out non-ethanol gasoline. I am certainly not going to avoid an area I want to see due to lack of pure gasoline. I have confidence in the FJR, I trust it to digest what I feed it. Of course, I am One of Those Guys that always runs the premium fuel. It makes ME happy to do that and it is my (wife's) money.

I will say that from time to time I accidentally get pure gasoline and I can notice a slight increase in fuel economy. Since the FJR has power to spare and I seldom use all of it, I usually do not notice a power increase. I notice more difference in the power due to elevation changes than the fuel content.

 
My FJR has burned anything I've put in it without any problems.

*off topic warning*

My low compression vintage bikes don't like ethanol. I hope real gas will remain available while I'm still living.

 
You know what happens if I don't put Ethanol gasoline in my FJR? NOTHING...Literally. It doesn't start or run without the magic liquid, and 99% of the fuel that's been put into my bike has ethanol. Hasn't exploded yet, go figure!

One of my K1600 buds accidentally pulled up to a Chevron on the indian rez in northern AZ to a pump that had about 30% eth and within 10 miles of the station his bike did puke! 2 months and over $1000 later he got his bike back from the dealer. His warranty with BMW was DENIED! (Stupid motorcyclist law; or something like that) Ethanol will tear **** up in large quantities but most all of us are subjected to the normal 10%, without any problems (at least, that we can detect)

 
I personally think it's a crime to put ethanol in our gasoline. It should only be used for Scotch or Irish - someone had to advocate the proper use of ethanol.

I think the only danger to using ethanol fuel in the FJR is like anthing else, if it sits too long it will gum up. Solution? Ride more, if you have to store it, treat the fuel, and start it at least once a month. I have done this with my wheeler, motorcycle, and generators after I learned that treating it alone may not help. Had an Onan generator that had fuel sit in it for about 3 months, the jets were really small and clogged/gummed up.

 
I've drafted a contribution to this thread 3 times now.

1. The first draft was simply a repeat of what others have said and it read redundant and thoughtless.

2. The second draft had a tone of "snippiness" and was curt and to the sensitive, might even be a little insulting.

3. The third draft crossed either the religious or political line (depending on your perspective) and clearly would have the potential of earning me a forum vacation.

So I suppose it's 3 strikes and I'm out.

 
The real danger of using too much alcohol in your FJR is similar to the dangers of you drinking too much alcohol. Your bike may wake up in a strange garage with its parts strewn all about and a stranger's hands on its exhaust system.

 
It's no wonder the FJR is tipsy and falls over and needs tip-over-guards, it has had too much alcohol to drink ;)
