I notice that on both our bikes, there is a guard over the front part of the exhaust pipe on the right, but there is not one on the left. What's the logic here? I did a search and found that the 2016's are the same.

Murray, It seems to have started in 2013 (mine) as a way to stop boots from melting on the (right) pipe.

I prefer the cleaner look of my son's 2003 (w/o chrome) but the welded on bolt would remain.

By why wouldn't boots melt on the left side if they would melt on the right? Both pipes look like they have reached the same temperature. I rather like the looks of the guard on the right.

I upgraded my mufflers to the Y series, and they come with a guard on both sides. Smaller than the original, but they look nice. They even have a embossed FJR on them.
Hey, now... standard motorcycle forum rules apply: "Pics, or it didn't happen".

Let's see a couple photos of this 'Y-series' setup, please...

I am pretty sure he means the GYTR Yamaha/Yoshimura slip ons. The newer ones say "FJR" but the originals were labled GYTR. And yes, they have guards on both sides. At the low, low price of $1050.99 they are quite a bargain if you need a heat guard on both sides.

They are not the GYTR version, they are the newer Y series, although I'm guessing they are the same, but different branding. I got mine for a lot less, $800. Still expensive, but you can't take it with you, so enjoy it while you can.

Cool!

Only $800 for a three-inch heat shield that I haven't needed for 52,000 miles. Where do I get one? I mean, two? They need to match each other, right? (Does that mean I shell out $1,600?)

I can't for the life of me figure out why Yamaha put grey side panels on a red bike. Gosh that looks awful. especially without the bags on.
