Haven't been around the forum in the last few weeks, due to prepping and then working the Oshkosh show. An F-16 over ran the runway at Oshkosh last week, putting on an impressive display of a dirt splash. We were a bit over a hundred yards away when the nose gear folded.

That'll rub right out.

Seriously, don't know why he over-ran (brakes, excessive speed, hyd or other failure, etc) but the outcome was actually a LOT better than it could've been. Pilot walked and if the plane had not stopped he would've gone into the rows of parked Warbirds on the diagonal.

Another Fighter jock texting while landing!

All Jokes aside... Glad to see other than a class "A" mishap report, the pilot got away clean. I did get a kick out of the fact he took his helmet bag with on an emegency egress. I have to wonder what in that bag is so important to protect. I'm also shocked that bystanders didn't clear out initially or at least once that engine flash fired. I would have been long gone...

Oshkosh is on of the best airshows I ever had the pleasure to work/attend, If you can call that work. ;)

You can see that the wingman was moving faster at the same point in the runway than the leader. My guess is that the guy either landed late or had brake issues. I'm not familiar with the airfield - I'm guessing the runway at Oshkosh is a A LOT shorter than the typical Air Force runways which are 10,000 feet or more and much more forgiving.

Looks like way too fast an approach to me. He didn't even get his nose gear down until most of the runway was used up. Friggin Air Farce pukes. A navy pilot would have had that thing stopped before mid-runway. :)

Camera operator needs some practice too. Must be another Air Farce puke.

:)

Just glad the pilot walked away OK! Skoot, do they trust the Air Farce with cameras?

Gotta call malfunction on this one, even if he was in hot the nose should have had some squat under hard braking, I didn't see that.

Poor *******. Imagine making such an epic f*$#-up in front of all those people. So much for a fun weekend for him.

Yo Checkswrecks - how come I didn't see you on the video running out there to start doing 'your thing'? Slacker!

This could have easily been avoided with a tail hook and some arresting gear! ;)

We can't tell where he touched down, but it's obvious he was WAY faster than the first jet at the same point.

As for the nose-up attitude for so long, they hold the nose up intentionally during roll-out. The wing drag thus presented slows the aircraft more than the wheel brakes alone possibly could. Think what trying to wheel-brake something the weight of a large loaded rental truck with wheels smaller than your bike carries (14.5 inch main gear wheel diameter.) Without thrust reversers like an airliner uses, the wheel brakes alone just won't stop the damn thing without catching fire.

I don't think it's a mechanical, I think he overshot his touchdown.

EDIT: Found this one doing a Youtube search, shows the airbrakes (immediately in front of the jet exhaust nozzle) not deployed on the second aircraft.

Both of these^^ :lol2:

Eating up runway that quickly has me wondering why he didn't initiate a go-around. Perhaps some circumstance prevented it.

I wonder how many cubic yards of soil got scooped into the that turbine. That bird's a total! Might have just ended someone's flying career, too.

Considering it was an AirShow, I would be less than shocked to hear this was a very "seasoned" pilot that only maintains proficiency quals but no longer actively flys.

Sure Colonel... Here's the keys, have a great time!

We were on the horn with our Air Force buds right away and this one is theirs.

I did have to thank my Air Force compadres for helping my edification, though. Coming near the end of a career in looking at wrecks, this was the first I ever saw happen, in which I got to see the dirt splash like water. It was a heck of a show and the dirt splash was a good 15 feet high. From my odd perspective on things, it was TOTALLY cool!

;)

I'd say which of you is closest, but then you'd have to be shot and we got no budget for bullets.

Are landing shoots 'chutes a thing of the past?? All F4's had them.
Took me a minute to realize what you meant. :)

I don't think anything since the F-4 has used drag 'chutes for landing. They now have the speed brake panels, and the nose-up attitude to present the wings as a speed brake.

That's what happened to the fence at Lowry AFB in 1965, the "Colonel" drove that T-33 right through it, never got a wheel off the ground.
