Just my luck, just as the weather is cooling down and my heated grips feel oh so good, the throttle side has quit working. When it quit working the other hand went into overdrive getting so hot I had to shut it off completely.

The problem, the wire inside the throttle housing has flexed too many times and the wire broke in two. I guess we'll see if the YES warranty will cover this. Hope so, the throttle grip alone runs from $185 to $260  depending where you try to buy it on line.

Anyone else had a similar problem with their factory heated grips?

A couple of weeks back, I noticed that my throttle required a bit more effort than usual, and figured that I needed to lube the cables.

Further investigation revealed that the wire to the heated grip had broken and was binding inside the housing enough to prevent the throttle return from operating correctly.

Hasn't been cold enough to merit using the heated grips this season yet, but I will be interested to learn if the YES warranty covers this.

If it's a factory setup and Y.E.S. doesn't cover it then I'd be giving Yamaha an earful. That should be on their dime for certain. If they don't (and your next mount is certainly going to be a Honda) then I agree with CAJW, the Dual Stars are an economic alternative. See an old post about several options here.

Best of luck,

Sounds more like the wires on the throttle side have shorted together (or possibly one to ground?). The factory grips are wired in series (117, 118 to the left of the picture)

so that would explain the left hand one going "... into overdrive getting so hot ...", a short circuit would make the left side dissipate 4 times its usual power. And the short could be anywhere in the loom.

Sorry to hijack but I've not been able to find this answer with search for some reason: I would like to use the OEM grip connectors on my '06 to trigger a relay for my cheapo symtec grip heaters. can you point me to the correct wire?

I'd be interested to know if these cases of failed OEM grips were caused by incorrect installation. The instructions that come with the grips are not the best, and I've read about one person getting the OEM grips installed by a Yamaha shop where they had determined that the kit included extra parts that shouldn't be used (the replacement throttle cable/tube housing AND the longer throttle tube that the grip comes pre-mounted on) because they apparently couldn't get it installed with all parts in the kit without binding.

Here's how the heated grip wire is supposed to look inside the housing, and it seems to be designed in a way that would prevent wire damage due to repeated twisting of the throttle:

Good news - the new heated grip is covered by YES. :yahoo:

These grips were factory installed, (not by the dealer).

The both wires broke completely in two about a half inch from where the wire enter the molded section of the grip.

Thanks to everyone for the info.
