Well after 4 hours of effort, I failed to seat the beads on some new Dunloap Q3 for my sons Aprilia Dorsoduro. No amount of lube (numerous types) nor a full soak from the tire warmers nor 90 psi of pressure would get the new kevar walled sidewall over the raised lip of the Aprilia rims. End up reverting back to installing Q2 on the Aprilia rims without issue.

I had no issue putting the same Q3 tires on my R6 track riims. That raised inner lip on the Aprilia was just a no go for the rigid wall Q3. There is no stretch with the Q3. With over 200 tire changes under my belt this was definitely a full out frustrating failure.

Given I had no safety cage for higher pressure, not sure what else I could of done to get it to seat.

Thoughts?

I have had to use heat guns on some beads before at bike shop to get them to go over the lip on some wheels.

Heat gun to the point where the bead is almost too hot to touch, RU-glide, 120 PSI. With out a cage putting the tire around a corner with a locking air chuck on the end the air hose run by a regulator you can adjust is about as safe as you can get.

Mostly this was on the big 240+ tires mixed with some fricken overly expensive wheel from who knows what manufacture. We also put a wide ratchet straps around the tire so the whole load wasn't on the cords/carcase of the tire.

Some times those air blast tanks do the trick as they deliver a larger volume of air faster than a air hose. Point in bead open valve. The tanks empty in about 2 seconds.

Also had some that just wouldn't go. Metzler with one wide spoked wheel manufacture(don't recall who) just never went. A avon would go on like butter.

I have a centerless lockon air chuck that delivers good volume and a quarter turn valve at my compressor. I agree - heat is a big help.

I'll add the heat gun trick to the arsenal. Additionally, I can see where a heavy duty 2" ratchet strap would help prevent over expanding/overload of the center of the tire at high pressures.

I just ordered clamp-on/open center air chuck with foot control valve and regulator so I'm better prepped to safely deal with the next tire change on the Aprilia.

Thanks for the insights
