Don Arthur is the Surgeon General of the Navy and a long distance rider. Good article - I think the same one that was in Motorcycle Consumer News. I work at the office of Naval Research and we've had folks do work on this same subject. Have just produced a couple of phamplets for Marines - the information is pretty much the same. There really aren't any "magic" cures for fatigue. Good article with some common sense techniques and sound advice to help manage fatigue. Thanks for posting.

His in-person presentation of that material is even better! I got to listen to him at the IB National last August and it was insightful to be able to learn in detail about fatigue management and personalize it with my experience and body. I think I'm a safer rider because of it.

AND... wait for it...

A Chatty Moron (The Admirable)! Weeze some might proud Morons. IIRC he hadn't yet been promoted to SGoN at the time he worked up this paper. Prior to his current gig he was the Boss Man for Bethesda Naval Hospital. IIARC his career path included Navy Seal, his MD, while recovering from some injuries he then got his law degree, and then for grins became several flavors of Admiral.

We figure he can kick your ass, patch you up, then sue you for putting him through the hassle.

The thread through all of this is that he's a nice, approachable guy with lotsa street cred in the endurance community as well as some hefty professional creds to back up these kinds of contributions.

Don's article was in your Spank 2006 paperwork Iggy, did you miss it?<G>

His article is a MUST read for the serious rider, LD or not.

Don not only has MAJOR street-cred, but he holds the 4-Corners record. Something like 4 days 10 hours.

Bow down when he comes to your town.

Didn't miss it at all. It had it's own tab in the "Art of LD Riding" notebook I made....and still have in the garage. I even had a copy prior to SPANK and have linked out on this forum IIRC. I think I got a copy before I did my first BBG.

The in-person and Q&A afterward was just a great bonus and added more than the article gave. Anybody who gets a chance to hear Don speak should jump at the chance.

bettery yet, when you realize he's scoring the rider next to you in Buxton, Maine, snap to attention (be sure to send you chair flying backward) and proclaim loudly,

"SIR! I wish to report that my boots are polished, SIR!"

it might take a tick or two before it sinks in, but having an Admiral pronouce you, "one sick bastard", is worth it!

Yeah, and he set that record while riding an IBA certified 100,000 miles in one year. Amazing.

He had a very, very nasty crash about a year and a half ago when someone did a u-turn on a freeway and pulled out right in front of him. It's a sober reminder -- if Don can get caught out, we all can.

He's hysterical to talk to. And you'd never find out he's an admiral and an M.D. unless someone else told you.

And a quick plug -- while you're reading that article at the MD 20-20 site, sign up! It's a great rally! I'll be rider 13.
