Faulty Metzlers

I had under 5000 miles on mine and the mechanic was trying to be helpful and see if they would be covered under warranty. He said with that amount of miles though likely not.

These are Sport touring tires after all.

No garantee of miles...

Someone wanted a "bitchslap" smiley?

Here's my suggestion/contribution:

It would be lovely if everyone who has had a problem with a Metz would contact the NHTSA. Documentaion would be extremely helpful, i.e., date, date of purchase of bike, mileage of tire, maintenance records (to prove you are carefully monitoring your tires), etc.

Metz isn't going to step up and admit a problem. They'd then have to replace all the tires and it seems they are only having a small percentage of tire failures. Mathematically this sounds acceptable...unless it happens to you.

Personally, my Metz's were replaced after 6,000 carefully monitored miles. Others have had no problems. I wasn't willing to take the gamble....BTW, I love my Pilot Roads!

I'm sorry anyone has had this problem, but there isn't any secret about Metz tire failures.

I just submitted my complaint to NHTSA. My front blew out at 9,500 miles doing 65 mph. I contacted Yamaha about any warranty coverage, they inspected the tire and determined the belt let loose because of insufficient tire pressure, yea right! No more Metzlers for me, I got rid of the rear too, couldn't trust it. The Avons are doing just fine.

TWN, on that second smilie, I get the slap part but what is he doing after that. ..wait, oh my god...did he just...he did, didn't he?

"She wore a pearl necklace."

ZZTop

Thanks, that's helpful. I think I see how you've racked up over 2000 posts.

Is Metzler or Yammy giving any reinbursments for this problem?

You asked a question. I answered it. What part of my reply befuddles you? What's the problem? Did you not get a supplemental warranty card in your paperwork from Metzler? No vehicle manufacturer warrants the tires. They are all covered directly by the tire manufacturer. RTFB, bro.

Hey admins? Can we please get a *****-slap smilie?

Sheesh. <_<
Hey 2wheel you are the man. i enjoy reading your many insightful posts! ***** slap indeed!

Insightful? Perhaps you meant to say, 'inciteful'? ;) :D

Hey lookit guys, I mostly just try and have a good time here. Yeah, I post a lot only because my business affords me the time to do it and, as it is not overly sophisticated (nor are most of my customers!), I can usually post while talking to them on the phone...

"Hey, Bob, thanks for taking my call. How's the short game? You did? 10 handicapper now, huh, wow, that's great! How's the missus? Greeeaaaat, yeah, uh huh. So, what do you have coming my way this month?"

...as this is what 90% of my phone calls are like. The other 10% involve me smacking my head against the wall with the lame-*** problems that they come up with.

So, when all said and done, I'm here to have fun, enjoy the company, maybe make some of you smile and learn a thing or three. If you get pissed off at something I write just remember who wrote it. If I ever get serious about something, you'll get a PM - count on it...

Have a lovely day, K?!

+2 with a 9.3 from the Russian judge!

Holy sipes Batman, anyone TIREd of this tread? I mean thread, sorry.

Mission accomplished. Intended objective of finding out if there was an existing aggreement for some type of compensation from Yammy/Metzeler for FAULTY tires was acheived. Since there is not I will be off to order two sets of tires. Yep, the other bike needs some as well. I have been looking forward to getting these Metzelers off anyway, I never liked the way they felt. I was gonna shed them well before they were worn out but I never got that far.

Isn't amazing how they always leave themselves an out? No amount of my insisting that the tire pressure was ever far off would ever convince them otherwise would it? I think what did it was when I hit one of those reflectors between lanes on the freeway. Watch out for them there reflectors. No lane changing if you have Metzelers.

Now I get to try those Avons I have been hearing so much about.

Thanks guys.

Just installed a set myself (Avons). Used 2 BT 020s on rear up to 13,000 miles, prior to trip to CA from TX changed cupped 020 front at 11,000 should have changed it 2000miles earlier in retrospect. Kept the second front 020 as spare it only had 2000 on it. Avons on at 13,000.

Went riding up US1 north of San Francisco. "Treaded" very lightly as only had about 30 miles on them then. By the end of the day had a couple of hundred.

Here is the scoop.

At slow speeds i.e. hairpins the castering feel is greater than the 020s - the bike wants to turn in, almost feels like my ex VTX 1800 which makes it very easy to turn at very low speeds. As the speed increases they feel nice and balanced. High speed sweepers very stable, at least at my speed which is 80% of you hoons out there (occasionally 99% oh sh1 t )

A couple + of things. They seem stickier than the 020s, certainly they don't activate the rear ABS as as soon a new 020 at low speed "test" stops.

I love this - they do not react to those bloody groves cut for rain. The 020s twitch all the time. They seem to be better on asphalt snakes.

Guys have claimed they twitch because of the tread design. Well here is what I found. While you ride normally, hands on the bars they feel like the 020s. Sometimes I take my hands off the bars for glove adjustment etc. looked down at the bars wow they are moving very slightly, very different to the 020s. Nothing to upset the bike but different.

I like them and if they last longer like most people who ride like me claim then rock on baby.

I have run Metzelers on lighter bikes with no issues, but maybe the FJR is just too heavy for them.
